Adelaide Hoodless
Adelaide Hoodless (1857-1910) was born and raised on a farm in western Canada. Her father died when she was still a baby and her mother fought and worked hard to keep the farm and the family afloat. After her marriage, Adelaide led an easier life but was devastated by the death of her baby son. It is generally believed that the infant died from ingesting contaminated milk. It was this tragedy that spurred her to reach out to women, especially those living in rural areas, and found institutes which would support fellow wives and mothers. Primarily, her goal was teaching women the knowledge and skills they needed to take better care of their families. Adelaide Hoodless is recognized with having helped establish the Women?s Institute, the YWCA, and VON (Victorian Order of Nurses). She also wrote several course outlines which would serve to teach home economics in schools. She died while giving a speech at a college in Toronto.

Investor Toolkit: The right number of stocks for successful investors ...
Every Wednesday, we publish our ?Investor Toolkit? series. Whether you?re a new or experienced investor, these weekly updates are designed to give you specific advice on investing in the stock market and other investment topics. Each Investor Toolkit update gives you a fundamental piece of our investment strategy, and shows you how you can put it into practice right away.
Tip of the week: ?Starting out with a handful of good stocks and adding steadily to them as your portfolio grows in value is the way most successful investors reach their goals.?
The right number of stocks to have in your portfolio will vary over time. The number should grow as you advance in your investing career.
- The beginning investor: When they start out, most investors have only modest amounts of money to invest. Even so, you should invest at least several thousand dollars at a time, even if this means you buy only a handful of stocks. Otherwise, your broker?s minimum commission will work out to too high a percentage of your investment on each purchase.
-
Pick at least one stock from each of the 5 sectors. At the outset, you should aim to invest in a minimum of four or five stocks. Our advice is to pick one from each of the five main economic sectors (Manufacturing & Industry; Resources; Consumer; Finance; and Utilities). If you cannot manage to buy a stock in each one, you should still look to cover most of them.
You can buy them one at a time, over a period of months or even years, rather than all at once. After that, you can gradually add new stocks to your portfolio as funds become available, taking care to spread your holdings across sectors in line with our advice.
-
Add new stocks as your portfolio?s value increases. When your portfolio gets into the $100,000 to $200,000 range, you should aim for perhaps 15 to 20 stocks. If you?re married, it?s best to treat your family holdings as one big portfolio, even if you and your spouse keep your money separate (for our advice on treating all your investments as a single portfolio see last week?s Toolkit: View the article here). That way, you can be sure you aren?t operating at cross purposes, or investing too much of the family fortune in a single area.
-
Use our 3-part advice as a guide. When you get above $200,000 or so, you can gradually increase the number of stocks you hold. When your portfolio reaches the $500,000 to $1 million range, 25 to 30 stocks is a good number to have.
Of course, you may fall a few stocks short of that range, or go a few above it, particularly when you?re making changes in your holdings. That won?t matter if you follow our three-part approach to investing: invest mainly in well-established companies; spread your money out across the five main economic sectors, and downplay stocks that are in the broker/media limelight.
Our upper limit for any portfolio is around 40 stocks. Any more than that and even your best choices will have little impact on your personal wealth.
COMMENTS PLEASE?Share your investment experience and opinions with fellow TSINetwork.ca members
Do you have many more stocks now than you had during the first few years you were investing? Was there a period during which you added a large number of stocks? Was there a period when you made significant cuts in your stock portfolio? Let us know what you think.

Winter Cross-Training Part I: Snow Sports and Cycling - RUN? Events
Cross-training is important year-round for runners; however, it seems to be on the minds of runners a little more during winter months if you live in a cold climate. Maybe it is because there are fewer races to train for, maybe it?s the cold, or maybe you just want to change things up a bit. Whatever the reason there are tons of great options to explore to help supplement and benefit your running.
Snow sports:
Honestly, anything you are doing that involves being active is awesome. However, we live in Utah and we also have so many other cool winter cross-training opportunities that most don?t have. You won?t find a better hill workout than skinning up a mountain on Alpine Touring skis, telemark skis, or a Splitboard.
If those last four terms sounded like a foreign language here is a little more info:
?
?
Skins:
A strip of nylon or mohair material, that fit to and adheres to the bottom of skis or a splitboard. Skins allow you to literally walk uphill in snow with your skis on.
Alpine Touring skis:
A type of ski set-up with specific bindings and boots. The heel of the binding can be released while climbing up the mountain and then can be locked back down for decent, just like a traditional alpine ski.
Telemark skis:
Have you ever been out on the mountain and seen someone drop his or her knee to the ground to make a turn? Well that is telemarking. The binding and never locks the heel down.
Splitboard:
A snowboard that splits into two pieces like skis to climb up and then you can put it back together to make a snowboard for your decent.
There are several local races that take place in the Salt Lake area specifically for ski racing; one in particular is the Wasatch Powder Keg (website link). Although there is a lot more gear (translate to money) involved in this sport than running, it offers something fun and different during the winter months.
?
?Benefits:
- Altitude training;?the air gets thinner as you hike up higher and makes your body work harder to pump oxygen to your muscles.
- You get a hard-core hamstring and quad workout;?skinning up mountains engages your hamstrings (a muscle group that is often forgotten about). The downhill aspect requires quad strength to make turns; the inner quadriceps benefits most from this engagement.
- Touring allows you to access some of your favorite trails and see them in a different and unique way!
With backcountry travel there is risk involved. Making sure you have avalanche and snow knowledge is very important. Here is a helpful website to learn about snow conditions and also can point you in the right direction of avalanche courses: www.utahavalanchecenter.com
Some helpful links: www.splitboardeducationcompany.com, www.utahmountainadventures.com
Cross-Country Skiing:
For those that prefer more of a linear plane, cross-country skiing is a great work out and Utah offers many areas specifically for cross-country skiers. The gear is also a little less expensive than a downhill set-up and you run a much lower risk of avalanche danger.
Benefits:
- Builds endurance! ?It is about grinding it out over the long haul with no help from gravity,? says Stephen Olvey, MD, and associate professor at the University of Miami.
- ?Cross-country skiing engages quadriceps, glutes, calves, hamstrings, biceps, and triceps. Making this an overall body workout.
- You burn?more calories than other snowsports. For example, a 150-pound person would burn 500-640 calories depending on effort level.
For more information: www.utahnordic.com
?
Snowshoeing:
There are now many snowshoes on the market that are engineered to be sleeker and offer an experience geared to run. It is a great way to get out and experience the trails during winter with minimal financial investment.
Benefits:
- Cardio similar to running
- Less gear to buy
- Access to trails
Cycling
Utah is also a huge cycling state. I love to ride my bike, when the weather is nice. When the temps start to drop and snow accumulates on the sides of roads I tend to retire my bike to my indoor trainer or hit up my gym for a spin class. Last winter I forced myself to get on my trainer twice a week, every week, and I ran my fastest trail half marathon that spring. I don?t think it was a coincidence. If you already own a bike, and have room, a trainer is a great option for at-home workouts. If you don?t have a bike or just like the atmosphere of the gym and an intense class led by an instructor than a spin class might be something that would interest you. Most gyms and recreation centers offer spin classes. (Picture of Cyclops trainer)
Benefits:
- Development of power muscles: Quads, Glutes, and Calves
- Reduces impact, thus, reducing stress on joints and lessening chances of impact related injury
- Shifting gears allows you the ability to go up or down in intensity during a workout
- Great form of ?active recovery?
- Increases leg turnover
So get out there and remember the challenge to yourself?.R-U-N?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Adele is rolling in the records.
The 24-year-old British songstress's album "21" has sold more than 10 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album reached the milestone last week, less than two years after its release.
"21" is the 21st album to sell 10 million copies since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.
Adele's sophomore studio album debuted in 2011 and featured such hits as "Rolling in the Deep," ''Someone Like You" and "Set Fire to the Rain."
It's the third album to reach the 10 million mark in 2012. Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" and Usher's "Confessions" both crossed the 10 million mark earlier this year.
Adele won in all six categories she was nominated in at the Grammys earlier this year, including album of the year.

High-dose opioid treatment associated with mental health and medical comorbidities
ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Most patients taking opioids for low back pain or other pain syndromes are prescribed low-to moderate doses, but a substantial number are given higher doses. Although there is no consensus on an absolute limit because tolerance varies over time among individual patients, what is known, however, is higher does are associated with elevated risks for side effects, addiction, overdoses and death. A study published by Oregon Health and Sciences University in The Journal of Pain showed that patients on higher doses of opioids had higher rates of psychiatric problems, co-prescriptions of sedatives and health care services utilization.
The Journal of Pain is the per-review publication of the American Pain Society.
For the study, the research team sought to examine correlates of higher dose opioid use among patients in primary care settings being treated for low back pain. The goals were to determine the prevalence of higher dose opioid prescribing, identify the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients receiving higher doses, and examine health services utilization patterns among high-dose users.
Electronic pharmacy and medical records were examined for 26,000 adults 18 and older diagnosed with low back pain, of which 61 percent received an opioid prescription. Among patients receiving long-term opioid treatment, nearly 9 percent received a higher dose in their final prescription. Patients receiving higher doses of opioid therapy were prescribed a median daily dose of 180 mg per day, which was seven times greater that patients receiving lower doses.
The analysis showed that chronic pain patients with comorbid psychiatric diagnoses are more likely to be prescribed opioids compared with patients without psychiatric problems. The authors found that the prevalence of mental health diagnoses increases with longer duration of opioid use. Studies have indicated a relationship between depression and persistent pain and that each could have a causative influence on the other. Thus, depression may lead to more opioid use and opioid use may cause or exacerbate depression.
The authors concluded their results should prompt physicians to screen opioid therapy candidates for mental health and substance use disorders.
Another finding reported in the study showed that patients in the higher dose group were frequent consumers of medical services, including visits to emergency departments. Also, higher dose patients had the largest number of different prescribers, which could indicate continued uncontrolled pain, continuity of care problems or "doctor shopping."

Transforming RC robot reaches production form packing heat and a WiFi camera (video)
If you're like us, seeing that transforming RC robot in the spring was a mild form of torture without any clues as to when (and if) we could try it for ourselves. Kenji Ishida has clearly been busy assuaging our fears since then, as he just took the wraps from what should be the finished version of his brainchild. The now Brave Robotics-branded machine is more polished, with a 3D-printed shell, but it's the technical upgrades that will have more of us scrambling for the product page: the production model is toting a missile launcher in each arm as well as a WiFi camera to follow its exploits in both car and robot modes. Anyone who wants the robot as quickly as possible will have to contact Ishida-san, if it's not too late; there are just 10 units in the initial batch, and pricing is only available on request. A one-month wait for shipping will scuttle any hopes of getting one as a timely gift, too. That said, we can only imagine that any robotics fan would be ecstatic to get an IOU under the tree for Brave Robotics' project.

Unemployment Benefits, Payroll Tax Cut Really at ... - Yahoo! Finance
In recent months, consumer confidence has risen as the unemployment rate has come down and the housing recovery builds momentum. This weekend's strong start to the holiday shopping season is another sign of an economy that's doing much better than feared.
Related: Black Friday Weekend by the Numbers
But the recession never ended for millions of Americans and many of them now face a frightening prospect: the loss of unemployment benefits.
"More than 40% of the nearly five million Americans who receive unemployment insurance are set to lose those benefits if federal programs expire as scheduled at year-end," The WSJ reports. "Already this year, hundreds of thousands of people have exhausted their jobless benefits. Now, virtually everyone left in the federal programs would lose their benefits if the programs expire as scheduled at year-end."
The roughly 2.1 million Americans at risk are currently receiving benefits through federally backed programs that Congress approved starting in 2008. Those programs, designed to extend benefits beyond the six-month time frame typically offered by states, are now set to expire.
Addressing this issue raises many complex issues, as Henry and I discuss in the accompanying clip. Anecdotal evidence suggests that long-term unemployment benefits have proven to be a disincentive for some Americans to find work, which obviously isn't a desired outcome. On the other hand, eliminating those benefits would put millions of Americans at risk of falling into the depths of poverty, which isn't good for society at large.
One potential solution: requiring people receiving unemployment benefits to do something to earn it, depending on their skills and physical capabilities. Whether collecting garbage on highways or visiting nursing homes or working on infrastructure projects, there are plenty of things people can do to make a positive contribution in exchange for maintaining their unemployment benefits.
At this point, there seems to be very little discussion about this issue ? or the broader issue of infrastructure spending ? in the ongoing debate about the fiscal cliff.
In a separate but related development, the temporary 2% payroll tax cut is also set to expire on Dec. 31. As of now, it appears the payroll tax cut will be allowed to expire, raising taxes by $1,040 a year for an average family of four earning $50,000.
Related: Here's Why Your Taxes Are Going Up 2% Next Year: Just Explain It
As with unemployment benefits, this issue appears to have been lost in the fiscal cliff discussions, which seems to have become fixated on individual tax rates.

US defends 'enormous' climate efforts at UN talks
DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? Anticipating an onslaught of criticism from poor nations, the United States claimed "enormous" strides in reducing greenhouse emissions at the opening of U.N. climate talks Monday, despite failing to join other industrialized nations in committing to binding cuts.
The pre-emptive U.S. approach underscores one of the major showdowns expected at the two-week conference as China pushes developed countries to take an even greater role in tackling global warming.
Speaking for a coalition of developed nations known as the G77, China's delegate, Su Wei, said rich nations should become party to an extended Kyoto Protocol ? an emissions deal for some industrialized countries that the Americans long ago rejected ? or at least make "comparable mitigation commitments."
The United States rejected Kyoto because it didn't impose any binding commitments on major developing countries such as India and China, which is now the world's No. 1 carbon emitter.
American delegate Jonathan Pershing offered no new sweeteners to the poor countries, only reiterating what the United States has done to tackle global warming: investing heavily in clean energy, doubling fuel efficiency standards and reducing emissions from coal-fired power plants. Pershing also said the United States would not increase its earlier commitment of cutting emissions by 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020. It is half way to that target.
"I would suggest those who don't follow what the U.S. is doing may not be informed of the scale and extent of the effort, but it's enormous," Pershing said.
"It doesn't mean enough is being done. It's clear the global community, and that includes us, has to do more if we are going to succeed at avoiding the damages projected in a warming world," Pershing added. "It is not to say we haven't acted. We have and we have acted with enormous urgency and singular purpose."
The battles between rich and poor nations have often undermined talks in the past decade and stymied efforts to reach a deal to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees C (3.6 F), compared to preindustrial times. Efforts taken in the absence of a deal to rein in emissions, reduce deforestation and promote clean technology are not getting the job done. A recent projection by the World Bank showed temperatures are expected to increase by up to 4 degrees C (7.2 F) by 2100.
Countries are hoping to build on the momentum of last year's talks in Durban, South Africa, where nearly 200 nations agreed to restart stalled negotiations with a deadline of 2015 to adopt a new treaty and extend Kyoto between five and eight years. The problem is that only the European Union and a handful of other nations ? which together account for less than 15 percent of global emissions ? are willing to commit to that.
Delegates in the Qatari capital of Doha are also hoping to raise billions of dollars to help developing countries adapt to a shifting climate.
"We owe it to our people, the global citizenry. We owe it to our children to give them a safer future than what they are currently facing," said South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, who led last year's talks in Durban.
Environmentalists fear holding the talks in Qatar ? the world's biggest per capita emitter ? could slow progress. They argue that the Persian Gulf emirate has shown little interest in climate talks and has failed to reign in its lavish lifestyle and big-spending ways.
There was hope among activists that Qatar might use Monday's opening speech to set the tone of the conference. But Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, the president of the conference and a former Qatari oil minister, didn't offer any voluntary emission targets or climate funding for poor nations.
"Some countries, especially the one where we are sitting, have the potential to decrease their carbon emissions. They have the highest per capita emissions, so they can do a lot," said Wael Hmaidan, a Lebanese activist and director of the Climate Action Network.
"If nations that are poorer than Qatar, like India and Mexico, can make pledges to reduce their carbon emissions, then countries in the region, especially Qatar, should easily be able to do it. ... They still haven't proven they are serious about climate change."
Al-Attiyah defended Qatar's environmental record at a later news conference, insisting it was working to reduce emissions from gas flaring and its oil fields. Qatar is already doing plenty to help poor countries with financing, he said, adding that it was unfair to focus on per capita emissions.
"We should not concentrate on per capita. We should concentrate on the amount and quantity that each country produces individually," al-Attiyah said. "The quantity is the biggest challenge, not per capita."
The concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide has jumped 20 percent since 2000, according to a U.N. report released last week. The report also showed that there is a growing gap between what governments are doing to curb emissions and what needs to be done to protect the world from potentially dangerous levels of warming.
At the same time, many scientists say extreme weather events, such as Hurricane Sandy's onslaught on the U.S. East Coast, will become more frequent as the Earth warms, although it is impossible to attribute any individual event to climate change. The rash of violent weather in the U.S., including widespread droughts and a record number of wildfires this summer, has again put climate change on the radar.
"While none of these individual events are necessarily because of climate change, they are certainly consistent with what we anticipate will happen in a warming world," Pershing said. "The combination of these events is certainly changing minds of Americans and making clear to people at home the consequences of increased growth in emissions."
In Washington, Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., urged the U.S. delegation at the talks to "heed the warnings from Sandy and other extreme weather supercharged by climate change."
"If the United States does not aggressively pursue sharp reductions in carbon pollution following the droughts, storms and other extreme weather events we have endured, the rest of the world will doubt our sincerity to address climate change," Markey said. "It's time to attack the carbon problem head on, and adapt to a climate already changed for the worse."
Many countries referenced Hurricane Sandy as a rallying cry for tough action to cap emissions, including a group of small island nations that said the monster storm may have jolted the world to recognize "that we are all in this together."
"When the tragedies occur far away from the media spotlight, they are too often ignored or forgotten," the island nations said in a statement.

Daily Report: Law Enforcement vs. Cellphone Privacy - NYTimes.com
Judges and lawmakers across the country are wrangling over whether and when law enforcement authorities can peer into suspects? cellphones and the cornucopia of evidence they provide, Somini Sengupta reports in Monday?s New York Times.
A Rhode Island judge threw out cellphone evidence that led to a man being charged with the murder of a 6-year-old boy, saying the police needed a search warrant. A court in Washington compared text messages to voice mail messages that can be overheard by anyone in a room and are therefore not protected by state privacy laws.
In Louisiana, a federal appeals court is weighing whether location records stored in smartphones deserve privacy protection, or whether they are ?business records? that belong to the phone companies.
?The courts are all over the place,? said Hanni Fakhoury, a criminal lawyer with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco-based civil liberties group. ?They can?t even agree if there?s a reasonable expectation of privacy in text messages that would trigger Fourth Amendment protection.?
The issue will attract attention on Thursday when a Senate committee considers limited changes to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, a 1986 law that regulates how the government can monitor digital communications. Courts have used it to permit warrantless surveillance of certain kinds of cellphone data.
A proposed amendment would require the police to obtain a warrant to search e-mail, no matter how old it was, updating a provision that currently allows warrantless searches of e-mails more than 180 days old.
As technology races ahead of the law, courts and lawmakers are still trying to figure out how to think about the often intimate data that cellphones contain, said Peter P. Swire, a law professor at Ohio State University. Neither the 1986 statute nor the Constitution, he said, could have anticipated how much information cellphones may contain, including detailed records of people?s travels and diagrams of their friends.
?It didn?t take into account what the modern cellphone has ? your location, the content of communications that are easily readable, including Facebook posts, chats, texts and all that stuff,? Mr. Swire said.

Sex and Relationships with Mikaya Heart: Taking Charge | The ...
Sensuality is a vital aspect of most sexual play, and when you have someone restrained you can really go to town, using anything from feathers to whips, and using them on all parts of the body in all kinds of ways, in differing rhythms, with differing touches, from very light to very heavy, from very slow to very fast. The hands alone can produce an infinite number of sensations depending whether you use your palms, fingertips, knuckles, or nails. The kitchen is a great source of interesting toys. You may think you don?t want to experiment with whips because they hurt too much, but when a person is physically aroused, s/he doesn?t feel pain in the same way, so as long as you use a whip or a flogger safely, you may both find it a delightful tool. However, a very light and gentle touch is an important aspect of sensuality and can be extremely arousing. What?s necessary is to be absolutely present, emotionally, mentally and physically, with every fiber of your body. You are silent and still inside, focused on, watching and listening to your partner on all levels.
If you haven?t played in this way before, you may imagine that, as the one in charge, you have to put your own feelings aside, and that desire and passion cannot be flowing through your own body. That?s not the case ? it?s simply a different kind of build-up, more controlled and held. It?s a more feminine way of being, slower and receptive. However, we all know that it?s more common for men to be in charge when it comes to sex (and life in general), and sadly, many of them don?t understand the art of sensuality; they don?t really know how to listen to their partners. They tend to do sex in standard ways, which frequently isn?t what women want. Therefore it can be very useful for women to take on the role of the top, and using restraints is helpful in establishing that role ? although even when you use restraints, you must radiate confidence. That kind of confidence comes from being very present and clear in yourself, and you may initially find that you tend to be anxious that you are not doing it right. That anxiety passes with practice, and in the meantime, I recommend that you just act as though you are absolutely certain about what you are doing, completely self-assured.
You don?t have to stick with any one role, you can play with different roles. That said, some people want to switch, and some don?t. Some find they only play in certain ways with certain people. Some people only ever want kinky sex, and others find that vanilla sex is even more enjoyable when it?s occasionally combined with kink.
Playing around in new and different ways is frequently well worth the initial discomfort and effort, since bondage and other role-playing can quickly change old boring dynamics that aren?t working for you any more. Because she risks being labeled a slut, it requires courage for a woman to step into her own sexual power but when she does so, it?s possible to go very deep, taking intimacy to quite another level. It benefits everyone, since men have a great deal to learn from women who open up in that way. Choosing to claim your power in the realm of sexuality is also likely to help you to be more powerful in your daily life.

Young teachers drawn to kids, career starts tricky
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Jordan McNeil offered skills in high demand by public schools when she graduated from college with a dual major in special education and elementary education in 2011. She needed just one interview to find the right spot for her, a classroom where she and two assistants spend all day teaching eight autistic children.
A year into her career, she says the greatest satisfaction comes from the skin-tingling "light bulb moments" when someone's knowledge really opens. Moments "when something really clicks with one of my students and I can see it, that they've figured it out and they understand," she said. "It's the little moments that make it worth it."
But the hard truth is that by some estimates as many as a half of new teachers like McNeil will quit the classroom in their first five years. That turnover is costly, since states spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year to recruit, hire and prepare replacements.
The struggle to retain good teachers isn't getting easier. An annual survey of teachers last year by MetLife and Harris Interactive found the lowest level of overall job satisfaction in two decades. A survey this year of more than 4,000 New York City middle school teachers found 39 percent considered changing school or leaving teaching.
A 2007 study by California State University's Center for Teacher Quality found that teachers driven from the state's classroom most often cited bureaucratic frustrations like excessive paperwork, too many meetings, and frequent classroom interruptions. Satisfied teachers most often pointed to having a meaningful role in school decision-making, collaborative relationships with colleagues, adequate planning time, sufficient classroom materials, and supportive principals.
"When these conditions were in place, teachers often viewed their compensation as adequate and a reason for staying in the profession," the California study said.
The Associated Press talked with promising new teachers a year into their careers. All graduated from Elon University in May 2011. All were North Carolina Teaching Fellows, a program which annually selected 500 promising high school seniors to receive four-year scholarships allowing them to graduate with little or no college debt as well as extra professional coaching and networking. The fellows promised to work in North Carolina public schools for four of their first seven years after graduation. State lawmakers quit funding the program two years ago.
Three teachers, all 23 years old, agreed they loved their profession for those light bulb moments, but all found surprises in their first year.
Eric Hale's leaving the country for a while.
He landed his first job in North Carolina's second-largest school district that includes Charlotte. But he says in retrospect he didn't ask enough questions about whether he and the school would be a good match. The school hadn't hired a new teacher in years, and it was undergoing an extensive curriculum revamp that forced changed on veteran colleagues, he said.
"I spent at least 60 hours a week in the school and a large chunk of that time was spent filling out paperwork or going to meetings. I rarely got time in my classroom to prepare things for my students. With the amount of time I put in I should have seen greater results in my students' growth, but I didn't have time to focus on that because I was always catching up on pointless things I had to do for my school," Hale said. "The new teacher support was minimal and I received very little planning time. I was exhausted by the end of it."
He quit and spent much of the summer in Italy, trying to land a job teaching English. He's now aiming to teach in Thailand or South Korea, and he's back home to assemble to certifications and other documents required. He didn't burn bridges. When the successor who moved into his 4th-grade classroom at Blythe Elementary in Huntersville fell ill, Hale stepped back in to work as the substitute for several months. The school was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday this week and its principal unavailable for comment.
"When I left college, I thought I would be able to just close my door and teach how I thought was best. But over time your colleagues and the overall mentality of the school can change you," Hale said. "The year I had definitely stimulated that thinking of what are my options, where else can I go."
Hale says he always wanted to teach abroad and plans to try for a year, maybe two, while he has no family responsibilities, then get back to a North Carolina public school to make good on his scholarship before he's obliged to pay the money back.
"I do plan on coming back to the United States and teaching in schools. I still love it," Hale said.
Sam Jennings said his first year teaching math at one of the state's highest-rated high schools was "absolutely wonderful."
"I know friends that had an absolutely crazy experience, from discipline problems to teaching issues with content materials," Jennings said. "I fell into a department that supported me 100 percent, sat down every week with me and helped me plan lessons. They gave me the support I needed in the classroom to survive without having major issues."
But this being real life, nothing's perfect. The eager Jennings said his surprises at South Brunswick High School came from students, and fellow teachers, who seemed less motivated than he expected.
"I think in general, the society we live in today, things are just given to students. They don't have to work for it anymore," Jennings said. "They expect us, when we go into the classroom, just to give them a grade rather than them trying to earn it and work for it."
Jennings has seen peers who've become jaded, for example hearing colleagues confess that they planned to teach little or nothing on a half-day with shortened course meeting time.
"That disheartens you because, here I am, I've got a lesson planned. I'm teaching. I'm rocking and rolling and going to get every bit of that 30 minutes out of my students. Then you hear a teacher that doesn't necessarily care," he said.
McNeil teaches a year-round program at South Graham Elementary School, about 25 miles east of Greensboro. She arrived to a bare classroom and a lot of on-the-job training.
"You come in as a first-year and you're expected to do what a 20-year teacher is doing. That's a really hard thing just to step into and there's no such thing as an entry-level teaching position. We don't climb the corporate ladder," she said. "It's all at once. All right away."
Learning how to run a classroom was the biggest task, from how to handle behavior and enforce discipline in her special-needs students to working with adult assistants. She said she landed grants for four iPads, which helps her students focus and work more independently. Overall, she feels she found a good fit in a mid-sized school district, which she knew from student teaching days.
But the end of her first year on the job came with some drama with a large group of unhappy teachers leaving.
"We had huge turnover for this year, which has turned out I think to really help the school turn around. But I think it was disappointing for me to see so many people kind of disillusioned with their jobs and the school, the school system, whatever it was," McNeil said. "I think a lot of what I learned from it is not taking things personally and separating your professional from your personal and just really problem-solving instead of just getting down in the dumps and letting things burn you out."

Local SEO - Big Thinking Online
Many business owners look at the internet in order to break into lucrative markets all over the world. Although the internet is worldwide, don?t overlook the impact you can have locally by being prominent placed in the search engines when qualified business partners, on your doorstep are searching for your business and services online. This is where leveraging local seo can be a great advantage for your business.
The Argument for adopting local SEO into Your Marketing Plans
1. Your consumers are going local
In a recent study by ad network Chikata*, results showed that nearly 25% of searches using Google had local intent. Therefore if there is a demand online for your products or services then people still feel more comfortable engaging with a local firm so they can get the item sooner and if there are any problems can visit the store or service provider easily.
More and more consumers are using search engines to find local businesses on their computers and mobile phones. According to Google,
- 20% of search queries are for local businesses,
- 40% of mobile searches are for local businesses and
- 97% of consumers search for local businesses online.
2. 40% prefer to Research Online Purchase Offline
That?s right, in a survey conducted by Google**, 4 out of 10 people prefer to ROPO ? Research Online Purchase Offline. So by being the business that give the greatest information on the product or service to local searches online it follows that you will get the lion?s share of the business.
?3. Prominent first-page listings
When a search for a service is coupled with a local identifier the results that are typically displayed on the first page of Google include a Map on the top right hand of the screen. This map is made up of the businesses that Google knows to be relevant to that search and is now a feature of Google+ local. In the organic results you will notice that each pin or marker on the map correlates to a listing.
?
The point is if you get Google to recognise your business on the map you get multiple first page listings.
4. Local search is less competitive.
Yes, there will be less people searching than there will be on a national level likewise there will be less businesses in a position to compete. The majority of the national chains will not, yet, be optimised at a local level and this gives greater opportunity for those that invest in positioning their businesses as the leader in the local market place.
Simple Steps to Get Ranked in the Local Results
As a business owner there are a few steps that you can take in order to boost your chances of benefiting from qualified local searchers.
Here are the 4 basic steps to take advantage of the local search engine optimisation opportunity:
Keyword Research
The first steps with local SEO as with any type of online campaign should be your keyword research. Without knowing if there is a demand for your products and services online and the particular words and phrases people are using to find the results you will be quite literally throwing your advertising spend down the drain.
Use Google?s free keyword tool to find keywords that are frequently-searched and relevant to your business.
Optimise Your Google+ Listing
If you aren?t already set up with a Google+ Local listing, you?ll need to create your profile and verify your ownership. Then, select the categories that best suit your business description, bearing in mind the keywords that you know to be prominent to your user?s searches. By doing this you will help Google know which keywords should trigger your business listing to appear in the local results.
Get Your Business Out there
In getting your business out there you are looking to include your business information, Name, Address and Postcode (NAP) in as many relevant places online. These mentions of your business details are known as citations and are a very important factor of how Google shows trust to a business online.
A good way to do this is by listing your business on local business directories such as Yell, Thomson local, Yelp etc
Get Reviews
More important than what you say about your business is what your clients have to say about your business. Make it a habit to ask customers to take the time and review your business by going to the business directories and leaving a testimonial about how good your business really is and how great the service was.
The more positive reviews that people say about your business the better, and the more Google and other search engines will pay attention to your business as they will know that by sending targeted traffic to your business they will get happy customers.
By having glowing online reviews you may convince other online browser who stumble across your business to pay closer attention as to how your service can benefit them.
The internet allows your business to branch out and reach lucrative markets that you could never have dreamed of competing in, but don?t get carried away and forget where your business started and the local community that you have at your doorstep.
The ultimate aim of local SEO service is to target your visitors and reach out people that have immediate requirements so that you can make your business a great success.

Zoologger: The beetle with a handle on its back
Zoologger is our weekly column highlighting extraordinary animals ? and occasionally other organisms ? from around the world
Species: Eocorythoderus incredibilis
Habitat: Hiding inside termite nests in Cambodia, letting someone else do the heavy lifting
Anyone who has ever been for a long walk with small children knows that one of them will inevitably say, or rather whine, "I'm tired. Carry me?" Male readers may well have given in and given the child a piggyback, if only to avoid being thought too feeble to carry the weight.
Termites are pushovers too. Like many social insects, worker termites spend a lot of their time carrying their larvae around. It makes sense: the larvae move slowly, so it takes them a long time to reach their food.
The newly discovered scarab beetle, Eocorythoderus incredibilis, has found a way to exploit the termites' helpful attitude. Not content with living in the termites' nest and stealing their food, it has persuaded the termites to carry it around. It even has a nifty handle on its back so they can pick it up easily.
Uninvited guest
Munetoshi Maruyama of the Kyushu University Museum in Fukuoka, Japan, discovered E. incredibilis in Cambodia earlier this year. He was digging through the nests of Macrotermes gilvus termites containing underground "gardens", about the size of a fist, where the termites grow a fungus that they eat.
After dissecting more than 130 such gardens, Maruyama had found 10 scarab beetles, each about 3 millimetres long. He realised the beetles belonged to a group called the Corythoderini, all of which hang around termite nests.
A closer look at the new beetles revealed that they are wingless and their eyes have shrunk almost to nothing. That suggests that they must spend their entire lives within termite nests, as they would struggle to survive outside. Maruyama says they probably eat fungi from the termites' gardens.
In a sense the beetles are parasitising the nests, but Maruyama says they are so few in number that they probably do not cause significant harm ? they are basically just sharing the space.
Blending in
It seems the beetles secrete chemicals that mimic those of the termites, allowing them to blend in. "They have many gland openings on their body surface, from which chemical substances will come out," he says.
Their disguise clearly isn't 100 per cent reliable, as most of the beetles Maruyama found were injured, with cuts on their legs. He suspects the termites sometimes realise that the beetles do not belong, and attack them.
But it clearly works quite well most of the time. Of the 10 beetles Maruyama found, two were being carried by worker termites. The beetle retracted all its legs as soon as it was touched, and then the termite gripped the handle on its back in its mouthparts.
The beetle benefits from being carried to nutritious fungi, but the handle may have evolved as a survival aid, Maruyama speculates. He says the termite nests are often attacked underground by driver ants, which have powerful shearing jaws and can decimate the termites.
When a nest comes under attack, the termites often evacuate, carrying their larvae away to a safe distance. Evolving a handle may have ensured that the beetles were also carried out of harm's way.
