Limitations to the 'revolutionary' findings of online studies

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

'Direct to consumer' research, using data obtained through increasingly popular online communities such as 23andMe, PatientsLikeMe and the Personal Genome Project, has methodological limitations that are known to epidemiological studies, including selection bias, information bias, and confounding. These limitations mean that the results and conclusions of research using these methods need to be interpreted with caution, according to a paper published in the journal PLoS Medicine.

Cecile Janssens, PhD, formerly of the Erasmus University Medical Center in The Netherlands and currently research professor of epidemiology in the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, and Peter Kraft, PhD, from the Harvard School of Public Health, argue that the findings of 'direct to consumer' research should be communicated in a way that is understandable, accurate, complete and not misleading. Researchers do often address methodological limitations in their scientific publications, but not on their websites, say the authors.

Studies relying on collections of self-reported data by self-selected participants raise critical questions that require further ethical analysis and public debate ? for example, regarding the provision of adequate consent, the safeguarding of public trust, disclosure of commercial development of research results, and the sale of participants' data to third parties.

"We worry that overstating the conclusions that can be drawn from these resources may impinge on individual autonomy and informed consent," the authors say. "Only a responsible approach with realistic expectations about what can be done with and concluded from the data will benefit science in the long run."

The authors argue that clarity regarding the benefits of research using solicited personal data is particularly important when the data collected are also used for other purposes, such as selling participants' information to pharmaceutical and insurance companies.

"The potential for sharing participants' data with third parties as well as the commercial uses of research findings should be disclosed more explicitly to participants prior to consent," they conclude.

CNN takes down 'hormones' voting story after backlash

Thinkstock.comA CNN.com story headlined "Do hormones drive women's votes?" sparked a social media backlash that lasted for seven hours Wednesday before the network removed the post late that night.

The story, posted in the website's medical and health section Wednesday afternoon, began, "There's something that may raise the chances for both presidential candidates that's totally out of their control: women's ovulation cycles."

The story cited a new study to be published in "Psychological Science"?by Kristina Durante, an assistant professor in the department of marketing at the University of Texas San Antonio and the study's main author. Durante's online surveys of several-hundred women led her to conclude that, when they are ovulating, single women espouse more liberal beliefs, while married or committed women gravitate towards more conservative views.

(The same journal published a study in October concluding that the more muscular a man is, the more likely he is to support government policies that serve his self interest, such as low taxes for the rich if he is wealthy.)

CNN said Durante hypothesized that single women "feel sexier" when ovulating and thus "lean more toward liberal attitudes on abortion and marriage equality." Married women, trying to resist their "sexy" feelings, do the opposite.

Durante wrote in an email to Yahoo News that there were some "misunderstandings" of her research in the CNN piece, but did not elaborate.

A barrage of women took to Twitter to mock the premise that women vote with their hormones and wondered why a similar story was not written about the biochemical changes of men and how they affect their votes.

"When I ovulate I'm all 'DEFICIT SPENDING SPURS THE ECONOMY' but when I'm not I want to privatize Social Security," joked one?of the thousands of people to weigh in on the story there.

The author of the CNN post, Elizabeth Landeau, defended the story, writing on Twitter that it was a peer-reviewed study and that she included skepticism from political scientists.?Landeau quoted Paul Kellstedt, for instance, associate professor of political science at Texas A&M University, who said that the study leaves out that men's behavior is also affected by biochemical changes.?Another political scientist, Susan Carroll of Rutgers, was quoted saying the difference between voting preferences of married and single women is better explained by the difference in their economic statuses and other non-hormonal factors.

When CNN took down the post it appended a note that read, "Some elements of the story did not meet the editorial standards of CNN," but did not specify which elements were not up to snuff. A spokesman there hasn't yet responded to Yahoo News's request for comment.

FBI arrests man for attempting to bomb New York Federal Reserve

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The FBI on Wednesday arrested a Bangladeshi man in a sting operation on charges he attempted to blow up the New York Federal Reserve Bank with what he believed was a 1,000-pound (450-kg) bomb, federal authorities said.

Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, 21, faces charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al Qaeda, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

The FBI said the public was not in danger because the explosives provided to Nafis were never in working condition and the suspect was closely monitored by the undercover agent - highlighting a script law enforcement has employed several times this year in similar cases, including one in Washington and another in Ohio.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama had been briefed about the arrest.

"Attempting to destroy a landmark building and kill or maim untold numbers of innocent bystanders is about as serious as the imagination can conjure," said Mary Galligan, FBI acting assistant director-in-charge. "The defendant faces appropriately severe consequences."

In an initial appearance in federal court in Brooklyn on Wednesday, Nafis wore a plain brown crew-neck T-shirt, dark-colored jeans and sneakers. He barely spoke during the brief hearing, mumbling answers of "yes" to questions from U.S. Magistrate Judge Roanne Mann.

According to the criminal complaint, Nafis traveled to the United States in January 2012. Once in New York, he claimed to be in contact with al Qaeda members overseas, although federal agents found no evidence that he was working for al Qaeda or that he was directed by the organization, according to a U.S. official who declined to be named.

Nafis considered several targets for his attack, including the New York Stock Exchange and a high-ranking government official, whom the U.S. official identified as Obama.

(For a related Reuters video, please see http://link.reuters.com/wen43t)

In the end, the criminal complaint said, Nafis decided to focus on the Federal Reserve Bank in lower Manhattan, which stands like a limestone and sandstone fortress atop what is believed to be one of the world's largest stockpiles of gold.

RECRUITS

To create a cell to help him carry out the bombing, Nafis began to seek out recruits, eventually bringing on board an undercover agent working for the FBI.

The two met on Wednesday morning and traveled by van to a New York warehouse, where Nafis assembled what he thought was a 1,000 pound bomb, before driving to the Federal Reserve Bank, among the most secure and guarded buildings in Manhattan.

After parking near the bank, Nafis walked to a nearby hotel and recorded a video statement in which he said, "We will not stop until we attain victory or martyrdom," according to the FBI.

Nafis was arrested in the hotel as he repeatedly attempted to detonate the inert bomb, the FBI said.

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, whose department was part of the operation, objected to suggestions that Nafis' plans were crude and bumbling.

"I don't see how you characterize (him as) unsophisticated, I mean he was arrested, but he clearly had the intent to create mayhem here," Kelly told reporters.

Other FBI sting operations this year have netted at least one foreign suspect, as well as some from the United States.

In February, a 29-year-old Moroccan man was arrested near the U.S. Capitol wearing a vest he believed was full of al Qaeda-supplied explosives, and charged in an attempted suicide bombing of Congress.

Five self-described anarchists in the Cleveland area were arrested in May and accused of plotting to blow up a four-lane highway bridge. An undercover FBI agent had sold the men inoperable detonators and plastic explosives.

Top EU court finds Britain guilty of dumping raw sewage

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Britain faces large fines for breaching European Union law on water treatment after plants in northern England and London dumped raw sewage into waterways, the European Court of Justice ruled on Thursday.

The court has the power to impose fines of thousands of euros per day, but has yet to decide what the fine will be.

Under an EU law introduced in 1991, known as a directive, Britain was obliged to meet new standards for treating waste water. While other member states have respected the law, Britain has not.

"The United Kingdom has failed to fulfil its obligations under (the) directive," the Luxembourg-based court said.

It said plants in Whitburn in northern England and in London had dumped sewage in local waterways.

London's sewer system, much of which dates back to Victorian times, discharges raw waste into the River Thames when rainfall overwhelms the 19th-century tunnels.

"So far as concerns the treatment plants of the collecting system for London ... their capacity is sufficient in dry weather, but not sufficient in the slightest in the case of rainfall," the court said.

Britain said that as it had already taken steps to fix the problem and that it was complying with EU regulations.

The court rejected its argument.

"A member state may not plead practical or administrative difficulties in order to justify non-compliance with the obligations and time limits laid down by a directive. The same holds true of financial difficulties, which it is for the member states to overcome by adopting appropriate measures," it said.

London has commissioned a massive 4 billion pounds tunnel, dubbed the 'super-sewer', underneath the Thames to solve the capacity problem.

But local residents and politicians have raised objections to the cost, which would drive up water bills.

In 2010, the European Commission asked the European Court of Justice to impose a lump sum fine of 15 million euros on Belgium for water violations, and a daily fine of 62,000 euros.

Ice sheet retreat controlled by the landscape

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Ice-sheet retreat can halt temporarily during long phases of climate warming, according to scientists.

A UK team led by Durham University has found that the geometry of channels beneath the ice can be a strong control on ice behaviour, temporarily hiding the signals of retreat.

The findings, which provide the first simulation of past ice-sheet retreat and collapse over a ten thousand year period in Antarctica, shed new light on what makes ice stable or unstable and will help refine predictions of future ice extent and global sea-level rise, the researchers say.

The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has stated that one of the main challenges in predicting future sea-level rise is to quantify and model the interactions between evolving ice sheets, oceans, sea level and climate. Significant efforts have been made over the last decade to develop computer models and collect data in order to reduce uncertainties and understand the potential impacts under scenarios of future climate change.

The results of the new research from Durham University, the University of Sheffield, the University of Cambridge, and the British Antarctic Survey are published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Lead author Dr Stewart Jamieson, a glaciologist at the Department of Geography, Durham University, said: "Our research shows that the physical shape of the channels is a more important factor in controlling ice stability than was previously realised. Channel width can have a major effect on ice flow, and determines how fast retreat, and therefore sea-level rise, can happen.

Although climatic and oceanic changes are crucial drivers of ice loss, the research shows that the landscape below the ice strongly controls the speed of any retreat.

Dr Jamieson said: "Our results suggest that during an overall phase of retreat an ice stream can appear almost stable when in fact, in the longer-term, the opposite may be the case.

"Getting a clearer picture of the landscape beneath the ice is crucial if future predictions of change in the ice-sheets and sea level are to be improved."

Marine-based ice streams are the fast flowing arteries of ice sheets, draining approximately 90 per cent of the ice that reaches the sea. They flow through large channels where the ice can move thousands of metres in a year. According to the scientists, the unpredictable nature of ice streams makes forecasting ice-sheet retreat extremely difficult. If ice streams speed up they can cause sea level to rise.

Durham University co-author Dr Chris Stokes said: "Ice streams are like taps filling a bath, but the problem here is that we do not know if something is suddenly going to turn them up or even turn them down."

Satellite imagery from the last 20 years has led to advances in our knowledge of ice sheet stability and has shown that many ice streams are getting thinner and retreating because the ocean and climate are warming. The new research shows that ice behaviour over thousands of years can successfully be simulated in places where ice streams meet the sea.

The researchers looked at the landscape of the seafloor in Marguerite Bay, in the Antarctic Peninsula, and saw that during a rapid phase of recession 13,000 years ago, retreat paused many times. Using a computer model designed to work in situations of rapid change, they found they could reproduce the same pattern in a series of simulations. These showed that ice dragged on the sides of the channel more where it was narrow, causing retreat to slow and in places temporarily stop for decades to centuries before retreat continued.

Many ice streams are found in channels with beds that are below sea level and that deepen inland. Current theory suggests that ice loss can increase rapidly in deeper water, but the new findings show that channel width plays a crucial role and that narrow bottlenecks in the landscape beneath the ice can cause retreat to slow down.

Dr Andreas Vieli, Department of Geography, Durham University, said: "We can see from our simulations and from new maps of the ocean floor that these bottlenecks occur in the same place as pauses or slowdowns in past ice retreat. This means we should look more closely at the shape of the bed underneath Greenland and Antarctica to better understand how ice might retreat in the future."

The researchers say that understanding ice-stream behaviour and the rate of mass loss from ice sheets and glaciers is essential.

Dr Claus-Dieter Hillenbrand, from the British Antarctic Survey, said: "Knowledge of the factors influencing stability and retreat of ice streams is of particular concern because significant portions of the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets are currently losing mass that contributes significantly to sea-level rise. Our model results help to explain the apparently time-transgressive retreat of ice streams around Antarctica following the last ice age."

Households to be put on cheapest energy tariff | The Times

Energy companies will be forced to place customers on the cheapest suitable tariff in an attempt to curb soaring household bills, the Prime Minister announced yesterday.

In a move hailed as a ?big moment? by one consumer group, David Cameron said that the forthcoming Energy Bill would compel companies by law to guarantee consumers the best deal.

The move, which surprised the Department of Energy and Climate Change, comes amid growing concern in government at the impact on voters of rising gas and electricity prices.

It is the first new policy since Mr Cameron used his Conservative conference speech to

With Romney in the lead, Obama needs to step up his debate game

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are huddled with their debate coaches, prepping for Tuesday night. Coming off a lackluster performance in their first encounter, Obama needs to do better.

Like the New York Yankees without Derek Jeter, President Obama is going to have to step up his game in the presidential debate with the newly-ascendant Mitt Romney this week.

Everybody expects this, as campaign surrogates from both camps emphasized Sunday on the TV news shows.

"He knew when he walked off that stage [of the first debate], and he also knew as he watched the tape of that debate, that he has to be more energetic," Robert Gibbs, an Obama campaign adviser and former White House press secretary,?said on CNN's "State of the Union.?

On "Fox News Sunday," campaign adviser David Axelrod said Obama would be "aggressive in making the case for his view of where we should go as a country."

RECOMMENDED: Presidential debate: 7 defining moments in history

Republicans agree, adding their own negative twist.

"I think President Obama is going to come out swinging," Sen. Rob Portman, who?s playing Obama in Romney's debate rehearsals, said on ABC's "This Week." "He's going to compensate for a poor first debate. And I think that will be consistent with what they've been doing this whole campaign, which is running a highly negative ad campaign.?

?They've spent hundreds of millions around the country, including a lot in Ohio, mischaracterizing Gov. Romney's positions and misrepresenting him,? Sen. Portman said. ?I think you'll see that again on Tuesday night.?

"The president can change his style. He can change his tactics. He can't change his record. He can't change his policies,? Romney advisor Ed Gillespie said on CNN. ?That's what this election is about.?

Vice President Joe Biden set the scene in his debate last week with Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney?s running mate.

Five times, Biden mentioned Romney?s now-infamous comment about the ?47 percent? of Americans ?who are dependent upon government, who believe they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it.?

Romney now acknowledges that his ?47 percent? comment to a group of wealthy donors (who presumable felt the same way) was ?just completely wrong,? and he stresses that ?when I become president it will be about helping the 100 percent,? as he told Sean Hannity on Fox News.

But you can be sure that in their town hall-style debate Tuesday night, Obama will find ways to needle Romney on the ?47 percent.?

It?s part of a pattern in the race as both sides try to embrace the middle class, especially those American families struggling in tough economic times.

Romney no longer tries to portray his early married life as a time of basement rental apartments and tuna casseroles, as he and Ann Romney did during the Republican National Convention. But he?s now telling more personal stories about the families he?s met along the campaign trail, working to demonstrate his understanding and compassion.

He may be a millionaire now ? although not in the same class as quarter-billionaire Romney ? but Obama does have his own middle class background (and that of his wife) to refer to. He?s got Joe Biden?s outspokenness?and the Vice President?s working class upbringing in Scranton, Penn., to illustrate the Democratic ticket?s role as champion of working Americans.?

And he?s got Bruce Springsteen ? rock-and-roll troubadour to a generation of fans (and voters) who idealize and celebrate the struggle of the underclass. Two nights after Tuesday?s debate, Mr. Springsteen will perform at an Obama rally in the key state of Ohio.

Meanwhile, polls show a race tightening to near-toss up status.

The RealClearPolitics polling average had Romney ahead by a scant 1.3 percentage points Sunday afternoon. Battleground state polls show a mixed picture. Gravis Marketing, a non-partisan research firm, reported Sunday that Obama has regained his lead in Colorado ? not as high as the 4.7-point margin he had before the last debate but 2.6 points today.

Canada set to lose WTO green energy dispute: report

GENEVA (Reuters) - Canada is set to lose a dispute at the World Trade Organization brought by the European Union and Japan over support for renewable energy in Ontario, according to a newsletter published by a Geneva-based trade think-tank.

Ontario's green scheme aimed to guarantee prices for renewable energy as long as it was generated with Canadian made equipment, which Japan described as protectionism when it brought the case against Canada.

The WTO adjudication panel considering the case has issued an "interim report" that says Canada was breaking WTO rules by requiring firms in the scheme to source up to 60 percent of their equipment locally.

However, the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, which obtained the leaked interim report, said the ruling was not entirely in favor of the EU and Japan.

While Canada's "local content requirement" was found to be discriminatory and therefore illegal, the WTO panel did not agree with the EU and Japanese claim that the Canadian scheme amounted to illegal subsidies.

Interim reports are confidential and preliminary rulings sent to the parties to the dispute a few weeks before the final report. The parties have a chance to comment, but the final report is normally broadly in line with the interim report.

The WTO is expected to publish the panel's final report on the case by the end of next month. Either side could appeal the panel's findings.

If Canada does lose the case, it may embolden critics of other schemes with local content requirements, several of which have been under scrutiny within the WTO.

The EU, Japan and the United States have questioned Brazil's local content requirements for the telecoms sector, the Indian government's preference for Indian-made electronic goods and India's local content rules for a nationwide solar energy drive.

They have also asked Indonesia to explain local content provisions for the telecoms sector and in mining, oil and gas, and asked for more information about Nigeria's apparent requirement for local content in its oil and gas industry. (Reporting by Tom Miles; Editing by Jon Hemming)

Home / Local and State News / Heaven Can Wait Animal Society Invites the Public to ?Lose a Pound with Your Hound? Memory Walk Oct. 21

Heaven Can Wait announces its 12th annual ?Lose a Pound with Your Hound Memory Walk? on October 21 at Bunker Park near Tenaya and Alexander.

?Lose a Pound with Your Hound? offers fun for all ages, while bringing to mind the community?s responsibility to support spay and neuter, and adoption efforts. Guests are welcome to take part in the mile-long walk that will include symbolic ?collars? to represent the 30,000 animals euthanized in the Las Vegas area shelters over the past year. While that number is staggering, it is 1,500 below the amount last year due to the spays and neuters performed by Heaven Can Wait Animal Society at its facility.

This year?s walk will have all-ages fun including paw and face painting, food, music, contest with prizes, the iconic ?poop toss? and vendors. Elvis tribute artist Eddie Powers will be on hand to keep everyone entertained. The event begins at 9 a.m. with registration, goody bag distribution, the beginning of the vendor bazaar and the ?Pups on Parole? group photo. ?Pups on Parole? is a partnership with Heaven Can Wait and a local prison for women that gives the dogs training and shelter, while giving prisoners hope and greatly reducing the re-offending rate.

At 10 a.m., the walk begins with games along the way. At 11 a.m., paw and face painting, prizes and entertainment.

Pets are welcome at ?Lose a Pound with Your Hound,? but must be up to date on vaccinations and on a leash no longer than six feet or otherwise restrained. People are required to clean up for their pet family members.

Funds raised will benefit Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, which is a Southern Nevada nonprofit organization. Unlike many similar groups that keep a ?reserve fund,? Heaven Can Wait pours nearly all of its funding into the support of its efforts, which include spay and neuter at its Las Vegas clinic, and many community programs as well as adoptions. Heaven Can Wait is a Southern Nevada organization and no money leaves the community. Those who participate in ?Lose a Pound with Your Hound? pledge to promote responsible pet ownership.

Individual registration, which includes admission, a goody bag and t-shirt, costs $30 and a family or group registration of four people costs $50. ?Collar for a dollar? donations are available in packages up to $50, but contributions beyond that are always welcome.

Cancer patient stresses mammograms

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - According to the Centers for Disease Control, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. The earlier it's detected, the better your chance for survival. Women over the age of 40 should get a mammogram every year.

Even though you may be busy and think you'll get around to it, a current breast cancer patient will tell you not to wait.

"I was diagnosed in June with stage three breast cancer, lobular breast cancer," said Linda Jeffries, a current patient at Unity Healthcare in Lafayette.

With October designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jeffries said she wanted to share her story so other women won't put off their regular check-ups when it comes to their breast health.

"Because that's what I did," she said. "I had a bad experience with a biopsy, with the person who was doing it and I told myself I was never going through that again."

Linda noticed a lump on her breast and kept telling herself she would go to the doctor but (as many of us would relate to that frame of mind) she got busy and put it off.

"Unfortunately that's not the thing to do," she explained.

Her doctor, Oncologist Glenn Papaioannou agrees. The earlier a woman comes into his office, the better.

"Believe me, you know, as much as I love my job I don't like giving bad news," said Dr. Papaioannou.

Dr. Papaoiannou says regular checkups seem to fall along a social divide. The American Cancer Society says only half of women over the age of 40 who are living in poverty actually get mammograms. Women are more likely to get screened if they live in affluent areas. Jeffries would be quick to tell you not to worry about the statistics, just go get your yearly check up.

"I just chose not to at the time and I can't go backwards, so I just go forwards."

Linda is going forward. She said her tumor has shrunk and she is staying positive. She said she hopes this story speaks to women just like her.
?? ?
"That's why I agreed to do this. One of the main reasons is that hopefully it will help one person, at least one," she said.

Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 according to the American Cancer Society. Clinical breast exams are suggested every three years for women in their twenties and thirties and every year for women 40 and older. Also, starting in your twenties, women should be doing breast self-exams. Of course, should you notice anything unusual, call your doctor. Keep in mind, these guidelines may vary for women with family history of breast cancer. Read more from the American Cancer Society's website on recent research and new statistics about breast cancer in the U.S.

If your insurance doesn't help with the cost of a mammogram or if you're currently uninsured, help is available. For example, check out the Women's Cancer Program at the YWCA .

96% The Imposter

All Critics (95) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (91) | Rotten (4)

In the annals of forged identity flicks, this is a towering Everest, dwarfing the deceivers in the likes of Catch Me If You Can and F for Fake.

This is edge-of-your-seat stuff and the difficulty is in the telling of the tale. To give any of this film away is a crime. You simply have to see it for yourself.

The most fascinating aspect of the movie is why the missing boy's family believed the imposter's story.

You may begin to wonder if you aren't being conned by the movie yourself.

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

Superbly crafted documentary about a missing teenager who mysteriously resurfaces after three years, prompting a riveting, better-than-fiction Cold Case-style drama.

If only the movie didn't almost glamorise Bourdin's action, they'd have been onto a real masterpiece.

If you are a fan of true crime stories or the workings of the human mind, The Imposter will blow you away.

... both interesting and repellent.

An unnerving experience and a brilliant piece of documentary filmmaking that peels back the layers on one of the most perplexing stories

Layton layers "The Imposter" with powerful images in the dramatic re-creations, as well as a brooding soundscape and a concise pacing that distributes its information with the reserve of a good mystery writer.

"The Imposter" may be the first movie since "Penn and Teller Get Killed" whose title may need its own spoiler alert.

Every bit as engaging as it is well-shot, it proves once more that truth is, indeed, stranger than fiction.

A mixture of documentary, mystery and thriller, which recounts an astonishing true story that gets more outrageous with each revelation

Strange and intriguing, searching for that elusive essence known as 'the perfect truth.'

Rather like watching a magician pulling off a trick which your eyes cannot see, The Imposter offers its own strange kind of magic.

The story is astonishing enough on its own, and The Imposter succeeds in enhancing its immediacy and intensity.

As his story unfolds, one gets the uncomfortable sensation that a joke is being played. But on whom?

One of the year's most provocative pictures.

Incredibly well-made and with a story you won't forget, "The Imposter" is one of the better docs of the season.

The Imposter emerges as a brilliantly slippery film that demands brain-stretching consideration. Astonishing, indeed.

Florida escort tried extorting $100,000 from New Orleans lawyer ...

A male escort from Florida nicknamed "Dream" allegedly tried to extort $100,000 from a New Orleans lawyer he slept with in California, a newspaper in Orlando, Fla., is reporting. Terrill Lewis, 25, of Titusville, Fla., threatened the unidentified lawyer with releasing compromising video footage and pictures of the night they spent together in a California hotel to the victim's family, friends and business associates in New Orleans, authorities told the Orlando Sentinel.

According to the Sentinel's report, the victim says he was in California in late August when Hurricane Isaac struck the New Orleans area, stranding him. The victim -- described only as a prominent attorney -- hired Lewis from an erotic website; and the two drank wine and talked.

The next morning, the Sentinel reports, Lewis was gone, and the lawyer awoke with a hangover. He found two used condoms in the bathroom. There was a text message on his phone to "Dream" saying: "Thanks it was a great time."

Subsequently, the Sentinel adds, the victim began receiving texts and phone calls from Lewis, who said he would distribute videos and pictures of the two men having sex if he was not paid $100,000. The lawyer paid Lewis $4,000 to keep quiet; agreed to meet the escort in Orlando to give him the rest; and contacted police for help.

When Lewis and the lawyer met at a bar Tuesday afternoon, authorities showed up, detained the escort and booked him with one count of extortion, the Sentinel wrote.

I'm Sorry for Cursing - Colon / rectal cancer

I'm doing better, emotionally.? I spent some time alone Wednesday evening while the fam was at church...I prayed a lot, trying to figure out why the walker bothers me so much.? And then it hit me (and no, I didn't fall down).? Pride.? I've always said things like, "The people in the cancer center waiting room look so much more sickly than I do" or have felt sorry for people who can't walk.? I've been proud that I was strong enough to handle chemo infusions.? Giving God the glory?? I'm not so good at that.

I'm not saying that God struck me down to punish me.? I don't think God is like that.? God loves us all so so much.? So why is this happening?? Maybe to help someone else.? Maybe to help me.? God cares more about my character than my comfort, y'all.? Maybe something in my character needed work.

Anyway, I do have a walker which the church generously gave me to use.? It has wheels and brakes and helps you get off the floor if you end up there.? It's helping me to be much more confident in walking around, that's for sure.? And at home I can put it in strategic places where I know I have trouble (bed, I'm looking at you).? It's a blessing.

In other news, I have an MRI scheduled next week, just to make sure there aren't any sneaky tumors causing trouble with my legs.?

Thank you always for your prayers.? It means a LOT.

DNA confirms genetically distinct lion population for Ethiopia

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? A team of international researchers has provided the first comprehensive DNA evidence that the Addis Ababa lion in Ethiopia is genetically unique and is urging immediate conservation action to preserve this vulnerable lion population.

While it has long been noted that some lions in Ethiopia have a large, dark mane, extending from the head, neck and chest to the belly, as well as being smaller and more compact than other lions, it was not known until now if these lions represent a genetically distinct population.

The team of researchers, led by the University of York, UK, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Germany, has shown that captive lions at the Addis Ababa Zoo in Ethiopia are, in fact, genetically distinct from all lion populations for which comparative data exists, both in Africa and Asia.

The researchers compared DNA samples from 15 Addis Ababa Zoo lions (eight males and seven females) to lion breeds in the wild. The results of the study, which also involved researchers from Leipzig Zoo and the Universities of Durham and Oxford, UK, are published in the European Journal of Wildlife Research.

Principal Investigator Professor Michi Hofreiter, of the Department of Biology at the University of York, said: "To our knowledge, the males at Addis Ababa Zoo are the last existing lions to possess this distinctive mane. Both microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA data suggest the zoo lions are genetically distinct from all existing lion populations for which comparative data exist.

"We therefore believe the Addis Ababa lions should be treated as a distinct conservation management unit and are urging immediate conservation actions, including a captive breeding programme, to preserve this unique lion population."

The lion (Panthera leo) is the principal terrestrial predator in Africa and therefore a key species of the savannah ecosystem. Lion numbers are in serious decline and two significant populations of lion -- the North African Barbary lions and the South African Cape lions have already become extinct in the wild.

One of the regions with a declining lion population is Ethiopia. In addition to a few hundred wild lions scattered throughout the country, 20 lions are kept in the Addis Ababa Zoo. These lions belonged to the collection of the late emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie. He established the zoo in 1948 and the seven founder lions (five males and two females) are claimed to have been captured in south-western Ethiopia, although their geographical origin is controversial.

In their study, the team of researchers recommend establishing a captive breeding programme as a first step towards conserving this unique lion population.

Lead author Susann Bruche, now with Imperial College London, but who conducted the research with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, said: "A great amount of genetic diversity in lions has most likely already been lost, largely due to human influences. Every effort should be made to preserve as much of the lion's genetic heritage as possible. We hope field surveys will identify wild relatives of the unique Addis Ababa Zoo lions in the future, but conserving the captive population is a crucial first step. Our results show that these zoo lions harbour sufficient genetic diversity to warrant a captive breeding programme."

It has previously been suggested that no lions comparable to those at Addis Ababa Zoo still exist in the wild, mainly due to hunting for their mane. However, the researchers say that according to the Ethiopian authorities, lions with a similar appearance to those at Addis Ababa Zoo still exist in the east and north-east of the country, notably in the Babille Elephant Sanctuary near Harar and southwards to Hararghe. These regions, the researchers say, should be prioritised for field surveys.

Professor Hofreiter said: "A key question is which wild population did the zoo lions originate from and whether this wild population still exists; this would obviously make it a priority for conservation. What is clear is that these lions did not originate in the zoo, but come from somewhere in the wild -- but not from any of the populations for which comparative data is available."
