Logitech Harmony Touch remote pops up unannounced at Best Buy

Logitech Harmony Touch remote pops up unannounced at Best Buy

It's been a long time since we've seen any new blood refreshing Logitech's line of universal remotes, but after indications of new devices on the way in an earnings call earlier this year tipster Andrew spotted this brand new Harmony Touch on store shelves. Arriving at Best Buy unheralded by any official announcement or specs so far, the box shots and list of features show the ability to control 15 different devices and (of course) that center mounted touchscreen. There's no mention of it on the Logitech site either, however one leaked blog post we spotted referred to this device and a Harmony Plus.

As our friends at Tech of the Hub note, the Touch clearly draws a lot of its heritage from the Harmony One and 1100 touchscreen remotes although to have ditched the dedicated Activity button for "one touch" control. The touchscreen itself supports both taps and swipes as well as up to 50 customizable channel icons, and the box lists both online setup and on-remote customization as features. According to Andrew it's rocking a price tag of $249 -- $50 above the current price of the Harmony One but $100 shy of the RF-equipped Harmony 900 -- hopefully we'll find out soon if what Logitech has added this time around makes it worth the wait.

[Thanks, Andrew]

'Avengers' in Space: NASA Astronaut Recounts Movie Nights and Life in Orbit

Now that he's returned to Earth from a five-month stay on the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Joe Acaba is still getting used to life on the ground.

Acaba landed in Kazakhstan Sept. 16 after riding a Russian Soyuz spaceship back to Earth with two cosmonauts, Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin. The three spaceflyers had just finished stints as crewmembers on the Expedition 32 mission of the International Space Station, which orbits Earth 240 miles (386 km) overhead.

"I'm feeling much better, getting used to it, and better and better every day," Acaba told SPACE.com during an interview Wednesday (Sept. 25). "You forget how strong gravity is when you've been gone for a while."

During his tenure in space, Acaba had a hectic schedule of science experiments, space station upkeeping duties, and hosting the occasional robotic cargo-delivery spacecraft. In fact, Acaba was present for the very first visit of a privately-built vehicle, the Dragon capsule built by Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) of Hawthorne, Calif., which docked at the space station May 25.

Dragon delivered a load of food, clothes and supplies as a trial run for a series of 12 delivery hauls the company is contracted for by NASA.

"I was pretty fortunate ? I arrived and then four days later, Dragon showed up, and so it was a real busy time for my first part of the increment," Acaba said. "It was very nice to be part of that first docking of a commercial vehicle, and we really enjoyed it, and it was a great milestone." [Video: Joe Acaba Encounters 'The Avengers' and Dragon in Space]

But it wasn't all work and no play in space. Acaba was the mastermind behind the plan to screen the movie "The Avengers" on the space station while he was there. A self-professed comics fan, the astronaut worked with NASA, Marvel Comics and Disney to uplink the film to the orbiting outpost in June.

"It's really nice to have a movie night," Acaba said. "As a crew, we're very integrated. Just like here on Earth, whenever you can get together with family and friends to watch a movie or whatever it may be, it's pretty special, so we enjoyed the movie and we just enjoyed spending time together."

The astronaut gave the movie high grades.

"I thought it was great, but I'm a little biased because I enjoy all the superhero movies, growing up with comics and things like that," he said. "I enjoyed it, and I was very thankful that we were able to get it up there."

Acaba joined NASA in May 2004, and flew to space for the first time on the STS-119 mission of the shuttle Discovery in March 2009. Before becoming an astronaut, Acaba earned a master's degree in geology, and taught in high school and middle school.

"I was a math and science teacher out in Florida, and I think the teaching profession really gets you pretty well qualified to become an astronaut," Acaba said. "It may not seem that way, but schoolteachers every day, they're in a stressful environment, every day is different, and you need to cope with a wide range of people and different experiences."

Thai sailors go "Gangnam Style" on YouTube video

BANGKOK (AP) ? The "Gangnam Style" craze has reached Thailand's navy, which is among the latest to mimic the globally popular dance video.

In a video posted to YouTube, a few dozen smiling sailors from the Third Naval Area Command perform the rodeo-style dance and other hip-shaking moves at their base on the popular tourist island of Phuket.

Lt. Cmdr. Patiroop Khemtis said Friday officers took three days to film and edit the video, instructing participants to mimic the moves in the original video by South Korean singer PSY. It was shown at the base's annual party Wednesday and posted to YouTube the next day.

The video shows white-uniformed sailors in sunglasses galloping through their offices and officers in scuba gear shimmying up the beach.

The original "Gangnam Style" video had close to 300 million YouTube views as of Friday.

Study reveals wide discrepancy in surveillance for multidrug‑resistant organisms among ICUs

Washington, DC, September 28, 2012 Screening practices for multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in intensive care units (ICUs) vary widely from hospital to hospital, according to a new study published in the October issue of the American Journal of Infection Control, the official publication of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

The P-NICE interdisciplinary research team from the Columbia University School of Nursing collected and analyzed survey responses from the infection preventionists (IPs) of 250 hospitals that participated in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) in 2008. The goal of the study was to explore the relationship between hospital and infection control characteristics and the adoption, monitoring, and implementation of infection control policies aimed at MDROs.

Researchers found that participating NHSN ICUs routinely screened for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (59 percent). However, other potentially deadly MDROs were screened for far less frequently: vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (22 percent), gram-negative rods (12 percent), and C. difficile (11 percent).

Forty percent of ICUs reported a written policy to screen for any MDRO, and less than one-third (27 percent) had a policy for periodic screening following admission. One-third reported a policy requiring isolation/contact precautions pending screening, 98 percent reported requiring contact precautions for culture-positive patients, and 42 percent reported a policy for grouping colonized patients together.

The study found that state-mandated reporting, being a teaching hospital, having 201-500 beds, and being located in the western United States were factors associated with having a policy to screen all admissions for any MDRO. Periodic screening after admission was correlated with mandated reporting, teaching status, and use of an electronic surveillance system.

"There is significant variation in adoption of screening and infection control interventions aimed at MDRO and C. difficile in NHSN ICUs, which is congruent with data from other studies and may reflect wide variation in published recommendations or their interpretation," said Monika Pogorzelska, PhD, MPH, lead study author. "Additionally, with the current increase in mandatory reporting, IPs may be focusing on fulfilling mandates rather than implementing policies based on their experience and hospital needs. Further research is needed to provide additional insight on effective strategies and how best to promote compliance."

"Rather than being driven by legislative mandates that are not evidence based, MDRO screening should be based on a facility's risk assessment, as the epidemiology of these organisms can vary from region to region," said APIC 2012 President Michelle Farber, RN, CIC. "APIC recommends that each institution designs an HAI prevention program that is effective for their facility and needs."

iPad App Offers Detailed Images of Einstein's Brain

puddingebola writes in with news of a new app that might be of interest to those studying Einstein's brain, or just looking for something neat for Halloween. "Albert Einstein's brain, that revolutionized physics, can now be downloaded as an iPad app for USD 9.99.

The exclusive application, which has been just launched, promises to make detailed images of Einstein's brain more accessible to scientists than ever before.

The funding to scan and digitize nearly 350 fragile and priceless slides made from slices of Einstein's brain after his death in 1955 were given to a medical museum under development in Chicago, website 'Independent.ie' reported.

The application will allow researchers and novices to peer into the eccentric Nobel winner's brain as if they were looking through a microscope.

'I can't wait to find out what they'll discover,' Steve Landers, a consultant for the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago, who designed the app, was quoted as saying by 'Press Association.'"

Google Maps App For The iPhone - Business Insider

Google is working on its own maps application for iOS devices now that Apple is doing its own maps app, Nick Bilton and Claire Cain Miller at the New York Times report.

However, Google's maps for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch won't be ready for at least a few more months. And then, when it is ready, Apple will have to approve it.

This is exciting news for people that are genuinely dismayed about Apple's maps. However, anyone getting too excited should lower their expectations.

Google has historically failed to deliver great iOS applications. (Although the new YouTube app is pretty good, so perhaps Google has figured out how to make good iOS apps.)

Even if Google makes a great iOS app, it will still be limited because of Apple's annoying limits on its mobile devices. You won't be able to make Google Maps a default application. So, if someone emails you an address, you tap on the address and it opens in Apple maps instead of Google maps. Or if you tell Siri, "Give me directions home," it will default to Apple maps instead of Google maps. Apple should let people adjust the default apps for iOS, just like it lets people choose default apps on the desktop.

All that said, if you really miss Google maps and don't want to wait for a maps app your best bet is to just use the web-based Google maps on your iOS device.

Important Tips With Regards To Commercial Real Estate | Eric Chua ...

There are a number of motivations that can drive you toward commercial real estate investment. At the same time, the choice to make this sort of investment must be your own, based on your own knowledge base. The more educated you are, the more earning potential you have. The hints and tips in the following article can get you started on learning the fundamentals of the commercial real estate market, or enhance the knowledge you already possess.

When dealing with commercial real estate, it is important to retain the services of a lawyer with a high level of expertise. You should have your lawyer review everything related to the properties you are involved in. If a complication arises relating to your real estate transaction, you should be represented by the best person in order to set everything straight.

Make sure that you know and understand what ?NOI? (Net Operating Income) is. In order to be successful and stay profitable, watch this number closely, and take steps to make certain it does not fall into the negatives.

TIP! Before negotiating a lease with a commercial tenant, work on narrowing down the list of things that would constitute default. This will lessen the possibility of a lease default by your tenant.

List your real estate at a realistic price. There are a lot of uncertainties which can have a huge impact on the price of your lot.

See to it that you?re dealing with companies that care about their customers before you engage them in a commercial purchase. If you don?t, you might wind up suffering over the long haul for an otherwise preventable error.

It?s a good idea to purchase properties larger than you actually need when buying commercial real estate. It?s not more work managing more units than less units, but each unit can cost less if you buy a property with more.

TIP! Make sure you never underestimate anyone when it comes to real estate, not your private lenders or your investors, know what everyone is capable of. Make sure you have a big network because there?s a lot of property that goes unnoticed and is sold, you want to increase your chances of making deals by always being informed.

Be mindful of the environment that your possible property is situated in. Since the responsibility lies at your feet, if there is any environmental waste that needs to be cleaned up, you will be the one who has to do it. Do you want to buy property in a area that is prone to flooding? reconsider your options before making a final decision. Talk to an environmental assessment agency to learn more about the area where the property is located.

People who invest in commercial real estate know the threat associated with fluctuating interest rates. Current conditions, with their unpredictable rises and falls, leave investors room to make a great profit or to suffer an incredible loss. Evaluate all long-term options, and take the interest rate hikes into consideration.

If your real estate deal includes inspections (and it always should), make sure to ask to see the credentials of all of the inspectors. This is true when working with pest or insect removal, since many people who are non-accredited work in these fields. Doing so, will help you avoid much larger problems after actually making the purchase.

TIP! Conduct tours of potential properties. Even better, have someone who knows commercial real estate tour the properties with you.

Before working within the market, you should first locate and secure adequate financing. Loan products and commercial lenders are very different than a home loan. A commercial loan may actually offer better terms. Because commercial property is usually more expensive than other property, the loan is going to be larger. This means the down payment you have to come up with needs to be larger. So it helps tremendously if you can locate the financing first in order to put together a down payment.

Don?t overwhelm yourself trying to work on several types of investments at once. Put all of your attention on one investment until it?s complete. Keep your focus on one certain type of property, whether it?s land, retail, apartments or offices. Each type of investment requires individual attention. You are better off becoming a master of one arena than mediocre with many.

Think about long-term economic conditions before investing in real estate. Be prepared for large-scale inflation during the next couple of years. Just a few years ago, most contracts protected you from inflation by locking you in at a certain interest rate. This practice is nearly extinct today, which can leave you susceptible to losses that are caused by inflation.

TIP! Find a trustworthy real estate firm by asking about how they make their profit. Legitimate brokers won?t mind answering this type of question openly and honestly.

If you want to rent your commercial property, well built solid buildings are your best bet. Tenants are more likely to move in when they know the property is well taken care of. Tenants will also have to deal with maintenance issues less often, which means they have more time go about their business.

There are a ton of good reasons to use commercial real estate as an investment, but you need to know a bit about it before you begin. Take the tips you learned here and apply them to your own commercial real estate endeavors. They will help you reach your goal of maximum

TIP! If you?re signing a lease for commercial real estate, then hesitance pays off when asked to put your signature on any standard leasing form. Large companies might insert extra requirements in the form, and they are often exceptionally lengthy.

Cooking Foods in Their Own Cans | WestElkFoodshed.org

I?ve usually hard-boiled willned foods in their own can, things like milk and mushroom soup. I place the will while not gap within the steriliser, cowl it with water and let it cook for half-hour. The results square measure wonderful. Is it safe to try to to that? will metals leach into my food?

For starters, will manufacturers don?t suggest victimization their product for love or money however storing food sealed till it?s able to eat. ?Cans square measure reliable, recyclable, sturdy packages that keep beverages and foods contemporary and permit them to be transported safely for thousands of miles, even into remote regions?but they weren?t created to be used as change of state containers,? says Scott McCarty of Colorado-based Ball Corporation, a number one U.S. food and drink packaging maker.

Proponents of can-cooking cite the very fact that a lot of canned foods square measure already het up in their cans to kill microorganism throughout the canning method, thus what damage might to a small degree additional heating do? McCarty concedes that some cans square measure so heated throughout the packing method. ?But that may not all cans or all foods, ANd it?s a rigorously controlled and monitored method worn out an surroundings that?s created to try to to it.?

As for what metals could also be natural process into your canned goods, it depends. In the U.S., most food cans square measure fabricated from steel whereas drink cans square measure sometimes created out of atomic number 13. atomic number 24 and nickel will notice their reply of steel, however the amounts would be very small to naught. Slightly additional heavy is that the proven fact that aluminum?large amounts of that are coupled to system disorders and different health problems?could in theory leach out of cans into their food or drink contents.

In order to stop any such leaching?which is unhealthy for the food and eater however conjointly for the will (as it will cause corrosion)?the insides of most cans on grocery shelves nowadays square measure coated with food-grade epoxy. however these liners are shown to contain Bisphenol-A (BPA) and different probably harmful chemicals. BPA could be a artificial plastic hardener that has been coupled to human fruitful issues ANd an magnified risk of cancer and polygenic disorder. A 2009 analysis of common canned foods by the non-profit customers Union found measurable levels of BPA in a very big selection of things as well as some bearing a ?BPA Free? label.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is presently reviewing whether or not or to not enable BPA to return into contact with food things in any respect. within the in the meantime, some forward-thinking corporations aren?t waiting around for AN bureau ruling. Eden Foods, that prides itself on the quality of its product, worked with its packaging manufacturer, Ball Corporation, back in 1999 to modify out ancient epoxy-based liners with a baked-on, BPA-free enamel lining derived from plant oils and resins.

This technology is nothing new; really, Eden stumbled upon it by asking Ball what it used before epoxy liners became customary some 3 decades earlier. whereas the custom cans value fourteen % quite industry-standard cans would, Eden maintains it?s well worth the further expense (which amounts to some $300,000 further per year). ?It was the correct factor to try to to,? says archangel Potter, Eden?s president. ?I did not wish BPA in food i used to be serving to my children, my grandkids or my customers.?

Father Thwarts Students' Plan to Bully Mentally Challenged - Fox 4

Posted on: 1:24 pm, September 25, 2012, by Sarah Clark, updated on: 01:36pm, September 25, 2012

PACIFIC, Mo. ? Country music singer Rickie Lee Tanner is outraged after learning students at Pacific High School allegedly planned to humiliate his mentally challenged daughter during this Saturday?s homecoming parade.

According to KTVI, Tanner said his 15-year-old daughter came home one day excited, saying she had been elected to the homecoming court. Tanner said he and his wife became suspicious because his daughter is mentally challenged and has the mentality of a 10-year-old and is not well-received by her peers.

Tanner said after the school principal was slow to respond, he conducted his own investigation and learned students were allegedly planning to throw eggs and quack like a duck when his daughter?s float went by in the parade. Tanner said it?s known that his daughter has a pet duck she considers her friend.

The Tanners have requested the homecoming dance be canceled in light of the allegations.

Further north in Detroit another teen girl was reportedly chosen to be in the homecoming court as a joke.

Whitney Kropp, 16, had been ridiculed in school and on Facebook, according to her mother, Bernice Kropp. What started out as a nasty prank in the small farming community of West Branch, Mich., turned into an outpouring of support. Word spread and others across the nation heard about ?Team Whitney? ? a Facebook support page with nearly 55,000 likes and counting. The creator ? a mother who?s never met Whitney, but has children who have also experienced bullying.

?I did this to bring awareness to the severity of bullying in our society,? she writes. ?I did this so that Whitney would know that she was loved. I did this to get the community to pay attention. I did this so more parents would pay attention. I want people to understand that education starts at home. Teaching morals and values STARTS AT HOME.?

Education After the Collapse: School When There Is No Classroom

For those of us paying attention to what?s happening in the world around us, the coming collapse is a foregone conclusion. All signs point to the inevitable: that an event, or series of events, will soon lead the world into what can be described as a modern period of the Dark Ages. Food will become scarce, violence will thrive, disease will spread, governments will turn on their people, and the fragile social fabric that has maintained relative peace throughout the Western world will ?unravel.

As Todd Sepulveda writes in his latest e-book, Education After the Collapse:

It?s only in the movies, apocalypse. I hope so. But what if?

It?s not too hard to make the jump?from our nice manicured lawns, suburban neighborhoods, Starbucks, 401K lives. On any given?day TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it) can happen. Yes, this happens?frequently on an individual or family level: losing a loved one, major medical situation, loss of a?job, etc. However, it is not in the scope of this book to talk about those specific situations, or on?a small level. The focus of this book is on ?the big one.?

The big one could be a great number of things. A quick search on the internet will bring you a?wide variety of scenarios. Or, just take a look at Matthew Stein?s article ?Six Trends Converging?on Collapse.? (Stein)

Even if we don?t ever have the ?big one,? we are living unsustainable lives in which at some?point, it will all come to a head.

Many of us prepare for ?the big one.? It really can come at anytime. And when it does those of us who saw it coming will have ample supplies of food, off-grid tools, homesteading skills and contingencies to deal with the inevitable hordes that will come looking to take what they failed to prepare.

One oft overlooked aspect of the aftermath of collapse, however, is the development of skills and education for the next generation ? our kids and grandchildren. If the existing paradigm were to collapse, how will we raise those who will take over when we?re gone? What will we teach them?

Todd Sepulveda tackles this subject with his latest project, Education that Matters (www.EDthatmatters.com), and discusses some key strategies for addressing the issue in his primer on Education After the Collapse (free e-book download).

As an educator, administrator, preacher and prepper, Todd sets the stage for a preparedness aspect that simply cannot be ignored. If it all does come crashing down, will we let all of our knowledge die with us? Will the math, the science, the history, the novels, the art, the study of human nature, religion and our spirituality go the way of the Library of Alexandria, to be forever lost in a pile of ash and rubble? Or will we pass on the centuries of acquired human knowledge to our children, so that they can help to rebuild a once great civilization?

After the collapse we?ll have the opportunity to create a new system of education ? one that doesn?t put 30 children in a classroom for hours at a time and forces them to digest materials that bore them to sleep or that they will never use. We?ll have the chance to integrate their education into their lifestyles. It?ll be a chance to start over with novel methods of teaching, something Education After the Collapse takes note of:

One size doesn?t fit all ? They say that schools and churches are the slowest industries to?reform. I have experience in both, and the statement is true. Our current form of education is?based on the industrial revolution, when factories needed workers for the assembly lines.

Students start their ?shifts? at the same time, sit in straight lines, go to lunch, recess, sit in?straight lines again and go home. The same is repeated 5 days a week!

What worked for you in your day, might not be the best learning environment for your child.?Yes, there needs to be structure: a place to work, a time frame to do it in, work that should be?accomplished. But that place doesn?t need to look like a traditional school house or desk. Your?child might work better outside in the fresh air. Sitting in a chair for 7 hours might not be the?best thing for your child either. Could you do that? They need frequent breaks and time to?process what has been learned before jumping to the next thing. There should be work, but?working through a workbook might not be the answer.

Whatever the structure looks like, it?should be established and revisited to find the optimal learning environment for your child.

With all of the time and effort you?ve spent on traditional preparedness-minded supplies, how much thought have you given to the educational aspects of post-collapse survival?

Our children will certainly learn how to grow or hunt for their own food, raise livestock, how to defend themselves, and how to utilize tools at homesteads and retreats. But what about the other skills? We?ve all gone to school and likely have a moderate to high level of education in mathematics and reading, but will we remember it all so that we can pass on this critical information?

Having age-appropriate educational materials on hand is certainly a plus. Considering alternatives, such as returning to tutor?and apprentice style educational formats will perhaps be even more important. Most of us are not trained educators, but each of us has skills, ideas and belief systems we can share and pass on to others.

Basic education is a must, as the world will recover in time.

At ED That Matters, Todd shares his insights, as well the insights of other educators to help prepare all of us for when there are no classrooms.

We strongly suggest you read his e-book to gather some initial ideas on where to start, and follow his web site for a continuing education?on education.

Surviving won?t be enough. We must also learn to thrive in a new world that will need to be built from the ground up. It?s our children that will be doing the heavy lifting. We should, thus, give them every opportunity to succeed.

Mikania micrantha, known as mile-a-minute weed or 'forest killer,' is an exotic, invasive species that spreads quickly, covering crops, smothering trees and rapidly altering the environment

TEMPE (Sept. 21, 2012) - It's called mile-a-minute weed or "forest killer." Mikania micrantha is an exotic, invasive species that spreads quickly, covering crops, smothering trees and rapidly altering the environment.

Researchers at Arizona State University are spearheading a four-year research project that will explore what factors cause people and the environment to be vulnerable to rapid environmental change, such as an invasion by Mikania. Study findings likely will serve as a harbinger of the future as humans increasingly experience abrupt, extreme conditions associated with climate change, said Sharon J. Hall, the study's co-principal investigator and Arizona State University School of Life Sciences associate professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

"There are many communities that have to deal with and adapt to rapid change. Mikania is just one example. We're looking at how social and ecological forces in communities make them more resistant or vulnerable to rapid environmental change," Hall said. "Mikania is considered one of the world's worst invader weeds, and it is having a significant impact on agriculture in India and China. If there are crop species, it will grow over them. It grows extremely fast, up and over trees, as quickly as three inches per day."

The study, "Feedbacks Between Human Community Dynamics and Socioecological Vulnerability in a Biodiversity Hotspot," examines how the social and natural ecosystem surrounding Chitwan National Park of Nepal is being threatened by invasive plant species. It is funded by a $1,449,521 grant from the Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems program of the National Science Foundation.

Researchers will conduct the study in an area covering approximately 20 square miles in forests surrounding Chitwan National Park, a protected area that is home to many endangered species, including Bengal tiger and one-horned rhinoceros. The park borders populous communities and forests that the people use in their daily lives.

The study will also examine what people are doing to spread Mikania and how the plant affects people's lives. Collaborators on the study include: Abigail York, co-principal investigator and ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change assistant professor; Li An, San Diego State University; Dirgha Ghimire, University of Michigan; Jennifer Glick, ASU School of Social and Family Dynamics professor; and Sean Murphy, CABI, an international non-profit organization focused on solving agricultural and environmental problems through scientific expertise.

"What sets our research apart from most previous work on invasive species and human populations is that we are taking an integrated approach to examining the environment, people, and society at many different levels: individuals, households, landscapes, community governance organizations, and so-called 'non-family organizations' like marketplaces/stores, schools and employers," said Scott Yabiku, the study's principal investigator and ASU School of Social and Family Dynamics associate professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Researchers are integrating a holistic, use-inspired approach into their study by observing and documenting the problem, using experimentation to tease apart driving forces, and implementing an intervention to reduce the spread of the species throughout the 21 community forests that border Chitwan National Park. Examining how people affect the forest's health and how the forest affects resident's livelihood will vary from an individual level to how forest management groups are addressing the problem.

"Not only are we thoroughly studying the social and ecological system surrounding the Chitwan National Park, we will also conduct experiments that test if an educational intervention with community forest groups can slow the spread of invasive species," Yabiku said. "At the end of the project, we'll implement this intervention in all remaining forest groups in the study area in the hopes that it has an impact on the well-being of the forests that these people rely on."

Mikania is a challenging adversary that can regenerate from dropping a small piece onto the soil. Possible interventions that may be implemented include carefully bagging the plant before removing it from the forest. Another practice that bears examination is use of fire in forest management, as this activity creates a nutrient rich environment that may encourage the spread of Mikania.
