Kitchen Remodeling Ideas | DirectBuy Articles - Direct Buy Home ...

Update your kitchen with a remodelRemodeling your kitchen is one of the best investments that you can make to your home. A mid-range kitchen remodeling project costs $43,862 and has a return on investment of 91 percent. However, your kitchen remodeling project should be completed with your own neighborhood in mind because it is possible to remodel your kitchen above the level in which you will likely see a return. A successful kitchen remodeling project will consist of splurging in certain areas that are important and cutting back in other areas.

Contractor

The contractor plays a vital role in the kitchen remodeling process. Hiring someone that you trust and instills confidence in you is often worth the extra price. Forgo hiring the contractor with the cheapest bid if he is charging an amount that is much different for certain projects than the other contractors or if he is a new contractor. Keep the contractor honest by paying him a deposit upfront and then regular payments as certain progress is made on the project. Make sure that the contract is detailed and includes specific material selections to ensure that you get what you are paying for.

Appliances

Appliances are one area that many homeowners splurge on. They can make a big difference in a kitchen, especially if the existing appliances are mismatched or outdated. Buying a matching set of appliances helps to make a more cohesive design. This may be an area to splurge on if you commonly cook in your kitchen or host large events at your home.

Stainless steel continues to be a popular option and many homeowners splurge for commercial grade appliances. Buying new appliances is usually a good investment because home buyers do not want to purchase new appliances when they move into a new home.

Countertops

Countertops are another good area to invest in. Having solid countertops allows homeowners to have ample preparation space and the countertops are a focal point for the space. While granite and slate are popular options and natural stones, quartz countertops provide a similar look at a lower price point.

Cabinets

New cabinetry can help to instantly update a kitchen. Some homeowners splurge on custom cabinets during their kitchen remodeling project. Custom cabinets allow you to create a personalized layout for the space, but they come at a price tag that is often in the tens of thousands of dollars. You may be able to achieve a similar look by visiting a cabinet supply warehouse and by making a special design for your kitchen. Home improvement stores often have showrooms and computer programs that allow you to select different designs and view how the cabinets will look after the kitchen remodeling project is finished.

Flooring

Various types of flooring can be used on a kitchen remodeling project. A natural stone such as slate or travertine may be used for a high end look. Homeowners can also save on the flooring cost by choosing a laminate material?that will last more years than wood or engineered wood. Tile is another affordable option for the space. Cork is growing in popularity and is a green option.

Layout

Sometimes the best investment of a kitchen remodeling project is something that home buyers cannot see. Changing the layout of the space can allow you to make the kitchen more spacious and functional. A homeowner can dramatically increase the livability of a home by changing the layout during a kitchen remodeling project.

Kitchen remodeling projects are often time-consuming and have a life of their own. However, by carefully evaluating your needs and splurging on some items but not others, you can create the kitchen of your dreams and stay within budget.

(AP) ? Four days before Mexico's presidential election, much of the nation's attention is focused on a man who appears certain to lose.

That man is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the fiery, feisty leftist who shut down the heart of Mexico City after the last election with mass protests against a narrow loss that he blamed on electoral fraud.

Final polls released Wednesday showed Lopez Obrador in second place, with the candidate of Mexico's former ruling party, Enrique Pena Nieto, anywhere from 8 to 17 percentage points in the lead.

As a result, few expect anything other than a Pena Nieto victory that will return the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, to the presidency after 12 years out of the nation's highest office.

What remains in doubt for millions of Mexicans is, will Lopez Obrador quietly accept defeat? Or will he call his followers back to the streets for a repeat of the 2006 allegations of fraud, and protests that shut down the heart of the capital for weeks and shook the faith of many, at home and abroad, in the stability of Mexico's young democracy?

In that last run, Lopez Obrador led until the final days and his backers could not believe the official result showing him less than 1 percentage point short of victor Felipe Calderon, though electoral courts upheld it. Lopez Obrador declared himself the "legitimate president of Mexico," named a Cabinet and toured the country to rally backers.

As his final campaign act this year, Lopez Obrador led thousands of people on a march Wednesday afternoon that many see as an uncomfortable echo of the last electoral battle.

Supporters waving the yellow flags of his party and wearing Lopez Obrador T-shirts shouted, "President! President! You are the President!" as they lined four lanes of Mexico City's central Reforma boulevard and headed to the Zocalo, the centuries-old square in the center of downtown that has served as the base for many of his protests.

Some of his supporters brought their pets, among them a white bull terrier with a message written on its side that read "a dog's life no more."

There were so many followers trying to get near Lopez Obrador that at one point of the march his security team had to take him out of the crowd through a hole they tore in a construction fencing around the Alameda park.

Maria Antonia Bedolla, a 37-year-old housewife at the march, said she is ready to take to the streets if Lopez Obrador loses again.

"He will win if they don't steal (the election) from us like they did six years ago," Bedolla said. If he loses "I will express my discontent about the fraud."

Lopez Obrador softened his rhetoric at the start of this three-month campaign, saying he wants to build a "Republic of Love" marked by reconciliation and peace. In recent days he has been pledging, when pressed, that he will respect the will of the people, though he asserts he is ahead.

But the former Mexico City mayor has also been launching sharp attacks on Pena Nieto and the PRI, and routinely expressing grave doubts about the validity of the electoral process and the potential for fraud.

He called Tuesday for supporters to closely monitor polling stations.

"These days we're preparing ourselves to defend the vote, so another electoral fraud isn't committed," Lopez Obrador told a crowd of backers.

Luis Rubio, president of the Center for Development Research, an independent think tank, said that Lopez Obrador has been "anticipating the alleged fraud for weeks. The notion that there is fraud is alive and well in his rhetoric."

"Lopez Obrador is Lopez Obrador and he will not recognize the result no matter what," Rubio said.

Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute was pressuring the candidates Wednesday to sign a "civility pact" committing them to respect the legitimacy and legality of Sunday's election results, a document that appeared squarely aimed at Lopez Obrador. The leftist has pledged that he or a campaign adviser would sign the pact in coming days.

"We are counting on the maturity and democratic spirit of each of the candidates," Deputy Interior Secretary Obdulio Avila told The Associated Press. "We expect that the free will of the people will be reflected in the vote, and that will be accepted by all the participants."

Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, president of the PRI, told reporters that the pledge "is a guarantee that will avoid a post-electoral conflict. The country doesn't deserve to live through the nightmare of the last six years."

Rubio said any new protests may not grow to anywhere near the size of those in 2006. Many Mexicans will have no tolerance for a repeat, among them the politically ambitious mayor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard, who is widely seen as the future of Lopez Obrador's Democratic Revolution Party.

"If they do what they did six years ago, it'll hurt me," said Humberto Ruiz Gamino, who sells fresh-cut mangos along Reforma. "I have a lot of ripe mangos, and if they organize protests, I'm going to lose a lot of business."

A wide margin of defeat would also sap the energy of any protest.

The polls show Pena Nieto favored by 32.2 percent to 41.2 percent of voters, in polls with margins of error ranging from 2.5 to 3 percent.

Lopez Obrador had support ranging from 23.8 to 25.4 percent. Josefina Vaquez Mota of the conservative National Action Party was third with support ranging from 18.8 to 20.8 percent.

Rubio also said that Lopez Obrador could be bolstered by a recent surge of antipathy toward the PRI, which ruled Mexico with a near total control for seven decades. That hostility has been most vocal among a national student movement that began with a protest against Pena Nieto at a private Mexico City university.

Cyclemeter (for iPhone)

The iPhone app Cyclemeter ($4.99) tracks, maps, and records your bicycle rides, then compiles all your data into excellent graphs and other records. And despite its name, Cyclemeter doesn't just record cycling. Other activities, from cross-country skiing to running, come preloaded so at the touch of a button, you can leverage the app for more than one sport?an enormous benefit.

What sets Cyclemeter apart from other bicycle tracking and mapping apps is you can use it without creating an online account or paying a subscription fee. Everything you need for Cyclemeter to work is right in your iPhone, unlike MapMyRide+ ($2.99, 4 stars), which sends you to its website for certain data access and tries to upsell you to a Pro account for additional stats.

Cyclemeter is accurate, rich with features and data, and works well, making it our Editors' Choice app for bicycling. It was, however, designed to be used on a handlebar mount, which could drive up the total cost. The app does function just fine if you ride with it in your bag or pocket, but you'll lose the ability to pause the app during stop times.

Rich With Features
Turn on Cyclemeter for iPhone when you start a bike ride, and it will track your speed, distance, elevation, total ride time, and stop times (so long as the app is mounted where you can easily pause and resume by tapping the screen), as well as plot your route on a map.

Speed, distance, and ride time appear live on screen while you pedal, as well as in detailed graphs when your ride is complete. When I tested the app, the distance calculations and GPS map of my routes were spot on. If you bike a particular route often, such as a home-to-office commute, you can save it to the app and use it to compare future rides. You can also add more detail about whether the route is difficult or easy, for example.

If you're a hardcore athletic type, you can add peripherals to the app, like a Bluetooth connected heart rate monitor to record even more data about your physical fitness and calorie burn. Cyclemeter also lets you connect with competitors, so you can, for example, pull another user's best time to set a new goal for yourself.

One great feature for serious cyclists is that Cyclemeter captures splits, giving you, for example, your average speed during the first five miles as compared to the second five-mile stretch.

The more you use Cyclemeter, the more items it will show in your history list, which lets you see at a snapshot the length of your rides in miles (or km if you change the settings) and time.

One feature I nearly missed is that Cyclemeter can calculate your calorie burn for rides based on your age, weight, and sex. I wish the app had prompted me to enter this tiny amount of personal data after installation. Instead, I missed out on having it for the first few rides. However, if you add your stats later, Cyclemeter does ask if you'd like to use the newly entered information to go back and recalculate calorie burn for the rides that didn't have it.

Maps
Cyclemeter uses maps powered by Google Maps, giving you the ability to switch between three different views: map form, satellite image, and hybrid satellite-map form. Start point and end markers use the familiar Google Map balloons, but Cyclemeter adds in green five-mile markers as well.

While I have no complaints about the mapping feature, one addition I would love to see is more integration with Google Maps, particularly as it adds bicycle routes and trails to its directions services. I'd love to be able to look up a destination and take off in the right direction all from the same screen.

Audio Feedback and Music
Audio feedback is another solid feature in Cyclemeter, and it's highly customizable. You can set the app to announce your progress (distance, remaining distance, speed and pace, for example) as well as your status compared with a competitor.

The app also contains pre-installed training programs for races, although they're only for runners (5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon). I'd love to see some pre-programmed plans for cycling?above and beyond basic interval training, which is included.

If you refuse to pedal without music, Cyclemeter built a special feature just for you: a pane that you can swipe to from the main window that lets you access your iPhone's music. No need to jump from app to app. You can pause, skip ahead, rewind, and toggle to a different playlist with just a few screen taps.

Cyclemeter Has More
Cyclemeter collects a wealth of data, is very accurate, contains several well thought out features, and appeals to fitness enthusiasts who participate in more than one sport. Cyclemeter is a whiz, and it's our Editors' Choice. There are even more feats this app can do that I haven't even had a chance to catalog here (sharing via social media, exporting data to spreadsheets, and on and on). Cyclists looking for a great app that captures their excitement on the road need not look further.

Weirton July 4 parade plans set

WEIRTON - The Fourth of July is just around the corner and local residents are being called out to participate in Weirton's annual parade.

Each year, the city's Board of Parks and Recreation organizes the parade for the Fourth of July celebration prior to the Renaissance Weirton Festival, set to take place July 4.

Kevin Elias, programs director for the park board, said he would like to focus on making this year's parade a blow-out event. The theme for the 2012 Fourth of July Parade, according to Elias, is "Salute to Our History - Last Man Standing."

Elias said he feels it's important to send a message that Weirton continues to be filled with good people and community events. He said he has contacted each of the local high school bands, several area dance studios and several others wanting to participate in the city's showcase event.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. along Main Street at the corner of Virginia Avenue proceeding south past the Millsop Community Center to Marland Heights Road.

Applications are still being accepted and anyone wanting to take part in the parade can do so by filling out an application at the Millsop Community Center or mail it to Weirton Fourth of July Parade, 3420 Main St., Weirton, W.Va. 26062.

There is no fee to participate.

Forgotten star cluster now found useful in studies of Sun and hunt for Earth-like planets

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? A loose group of stars, known for over 180 years but never before studied in detail, has been revealed to be an important new tool in the quest to understand the evolution of stars like the Sun, and in the search for planets like Earth. "We have discovered that a previously unappreciated open star cluster, which is a little younger than our Sun, holds great promise for use as a standard gauge in fundamental stellar astrophysics," said Jason T. Wright, an assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, who conceived and initiated the research.

Wright's research team's first paper on the cluster, known as Ruprecht 147 or NGC 6774, has been submitted to the Astronomical Journal for publication. Team member Jason Curtis, a graduate student in Wright's lab, led the work for this paper and will present the team's project in Barcelona, Spain, later this month at the 17th Cambridge Workshop on Cool Stars, Stellar Systems, and the Sun.

When searching for planets with an Earth-like mass and an orbit that allows liquid water to exist on the surface, astronomers often search around stars the mass of the Sun and smaller. "The Ruprecht 147 cluster is very unusual and very important astrophysically because it is close to Earth and its stars are closer to the Sun's age than those in all the other nearby clusters," Wright said. "For the first time, we now have a useful laboratory in which to search for and study bright stars that are of similar mass and also of similar age as the Sun. When we discover planets around Sun-like and lower-mass stars, we will be able to interpret how old those stars are by comparing them to the stars in this cluster."

Penn State University astronomers have determined that 80 of the stars in this photo are members of the long-known but underappreciated star cluster Ruprecht 147. In this image, the brightest of these stars are circled in green, and the less-bright ones are circled in red. These stars were born out of the same cloud of gas and dust approximately 2-billion years ago, and now are traveling together through space, bound by the force gravity. The astronomers have identified this cluster as a potentially important new reference gauge for fundamental stellar astrophysics. Credit: Chris Beckett and Stefano Meneguolo, Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Annotations by Jason Curtis, Penn State University.

Wright's team has shown that Ruprecht 147 is 800 to 1,000 light years from Earth, which is so close that it is bright enough to be seen with binoculars in late-summertime skies in the constellation Sagittarius. "All of the other nearby clusters astronomers study contain stars much younger than the Sun, and all of the older stars are more than 3,000 light years away. So this cluster, being both old and close, provides a unique opportunity," Wright said. Although it appears to be relatively large on the sky, the cluster can be difficult to spot because it is not very compact and it is located in the densest, brightest region between Earth and the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

To study the Ruprecht 147 cluster, which is much larger on the sky than most objects astronomers study, the Wright's team had to use some specialized, wide-field cameras -- including those on the MMT telescope in Arizona and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii -- in order to get its many stars within the frame of view. "Even with these wide-field cameras, we've had to build mosaics of images to cover the whole cluster and to take very quick snapshots so that we don't overexpose the brightest stars, Wright said. "Most modern telescopes weren't designed for clusters so bright and close."

When the object was first discovered in 1830 by British astronomer John Herschel, he described it as "a very large straggling space full of loose stars." He subsequently included it in the General Catalog of astronomical objects, which he compiled based on the observations of his father William Herschel. "The cluster was rediscovered in the 1960s by Jaroslav Ruprecht, which is how it got its current name, but until now no astronomers paid it any special attention, probably because many presumed it was an asterism -- a chance alignment of unrelated stars," Wright said.

Wright's team's work has proven, for the first time, that the Ruprecht 147 cluster is only a bit younger than the Sun on the astronomical time scale. The stars in Ruprecht 147 are about 2.5-billion years old, or about half the age of the Sun, and about the age the Sun was when the first multicellular life emerged on Earth.

The team's initial observations also have measured the distance to Ruprecht 147, as well as the directions and velocities of its stars to verify that they are moving together through space in three dimensions, both across the sky and in the same angle away from Earth. These observations confirm that these stars are members of a true cluster, not just a random pattern on the sky. Wright's team already has identified 100 stars as members of the cluster, and is working to find more.

Wright said that most of the work for this initial paper was done by Jason Curtis as part of his dissertation research. Curtis's work includes observations with the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and the Keck telescope in Hawaii, the Lick Observatory in California, and the MMT Observatory in Arizona. "This project is exciting for me as a graduate student because it gives me the opportunity to use the latest astronomy techniques and instrumentation to explore a star cluster that has never before been investigated to this extent," Curtis said. "While this project has given me training in well-established, fundamental methods of astronomy observation and analysis, it also is opening up new doors to cutting-edge astrophysics research." For further studies, Curtis is participating in observations with the Magellan telescope in Chile and NASA's orbiting Chandra X-Ray Telescope.

In addition to Wright and Curtis, other co-authors of the team's first scientific paper include Angie Wolfgang, of the University of California, Santa Cruz; John Brewer, of Yale University; and John Asher Johnson of the California Institute of Technology. The U. S. National Science Foundation provided financial support for this research.

"Our project with this important cluster is just beginning," Wright said "Eventually, it is going to let us find and study nearby stars with a mass like the Sun's, to help in the hunt for Earth-like planets, and to test and improve the models astronomers use to understand the evolution of stars including our own Sun."

Thousands evacuate after shooting sparks Utah fire

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (AP) ? Thousands of residents whose homes were in danger of being threatened by a Utah wildfire have had to find shelter elsewhere as strong winds fueled a blaze that officials believe was started by target shooters.

Residents of at least 2,300 homes in northern Utah were evacuated Friday, a day after the more than 6-square-mile fire started near the Saratoga Springs landfill, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. High winds then helped fan the flames onto tinder-dry grasslands.

Authorities were initially worried as flames moved toward property owned by an explosives company, but the focus turned to saving homes as winds kicked up and the fire moved toward Saratoga Springs.

Forecasters expect strong winds to persist through the weekend.

On Friday, fire officials were calling in additional aircraft and extra ground crews.

Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy said he feared the fire could take down the area's power grid, shutting off electricity to up to 7,000 homes.

"Several power poles and transformers ... up and down the fire lines have burned," Tracy said Friday evening. "If the fire gets a couple more critical poles and drops that grid, wires down on the ground, it will black out this entire area."

Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Teresa Rigby said the 2,300 houses evacuated include residents who voluntarily left, along with those ordered to leave.

BLM officials say they believe the blaze was caused when a bullet hit a rock and sparked the fire. This is the 20th target-shooting related fire this year in Utah, they said.

One firefighter had suffered minor burns, and no structural damage had been reported, said Jason Curry, a spokesman for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

A continued mix of hot, windy and extremely dry conditions has raised the fire danger across Utah and parts of Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado.

At a wildfire burning on more than 75,000 acres in northern Colorado, some homes were evacuated Friday night because of several spot fires started by winds outside the main fire. Some of those residents were evacuated after the fire flared up on Sunday and had only returned home Wednesday.

The mix of conditions that makes it easy for new fires to start and spread and cause existing fires to flare up is expected to last through Saturday there.

The fire west of Fort Collins has now destroyed at least 191 homes. It's also blamed for the death of a woman found dead at her ranch.

In southwestern Colorado, a fire near Mancos prompted authorities to order the evacuation of 22 homes Saturday morning. The fire was reported Friday and has burned up to 800 acres.

Gov. John Hickenlooper's office said he signed executive orders releasing $6.2 million more in state disaster money to fight the fire and two others.

The northern Colorado fire will have $5 million more available, on top of $20 million made available by a previous order. The fire has qualified for 75 percent federal reimbursement for firefighting costs, Hickenlooper's office said. A fire near Lake George will get $1 million, and the Stuart Hole fire in Larimer County will receive $200,000. The disaster money is coming partly from reserve funds.

Elsewhere:

? In Colorado, heat and low humidity is also a concern at the 1,150-acre wildfire burning near Lake George, which is 57 percent contained. A fire burning for over a month near Pagosa Springs has grown by about 1,300 acres. Two ranches have been evacuated.

? In Nevada, a wildfire that has charred nearly 12,000 acres of rugged terrain in northeast Nevada near the Utah line is 60 percent contained. It was started by a planned burn that escaped June 9.

? In Wyoming, crews were preparing safety zones where firefighters can flee in case a wildfire that has scorched more than 4.5 square miles in Medicine Bow National Forest makes a run. It's 10 percent contained.

? In New Mexico, a fire that has destroyed 242 homes and businesses, the largest in state history, has blackened 463 square miles in the Gila Wilderness and is 80 percent contained. Meanwhile, a 360-acre fire along the Rio Grande on the northern edge of Albuquerque was 50 percent contained. Nearby residents were on alert, but no one has been evacuated.

? In Arizona, officials battling a wildfire in eastern Arizona say they're prepared for high winds and low humidity. Firefighters have created containments lines around the community of Young and burned out fuel ahead of the fire. Crews are reinforcing those lines and patrolling for spot fires. The Poco Fire is nearly 12,000 acres and 25 percent contained. More than 740 people and several helicopters are fighting the fire.

? In Hawaii, the largest wildfire of the season has scorched at least 5,200 acres on the Big Island.

Gadgets Every Baby Boomer Needs | Alexis Abramson, Ph.D.

Casey Dowd, the ?boomer reporter? for www.foxbusiness.com, recently interviewed me for an article about the best new gadgets/technology for baby boomers.

_______________________________________________________________________

The marketplace for technology to assist aging adults is expected to grow sharply from $2 billion today to more than $20 billion by 2020, according a report from Aging in Place Technology Watch?and boomers are going to be on the receiving end of the advancements and innovations.

Boomer:? We?ve all seen the old reliable ?pill box? our parents used.? Are there other products available to help remind boomers to either take or that they already took their medicine?

Abramson: Baby boomers rely on their medications to keep them healthy, but complex medication schedules can lead to mistakes: missing doses, taking incorrect amounts, or taking medicines at the wrong times. These mistakes could lead to unnecessary doctor or hospital visits, illness?and even death.? It?s currently estimated that about one third to one half of baby boomers do not take their medications as prescribed.? With the complexity of medications many seniors take, it?s no surprise that 1 in 10 hospital admissions for seniors are a result of medication errors.? A plethora of new products and services have recently been introduced to the market to not only prompt patients to take their medications?on?time?but also in the?correct dosages.

Walgreens Rx App: Walgreens? mobile health app called Pill Reminder helps users track their medication and receive alerts. The alerts can be scheduled nine different ways, including daily, hourly, weekly and can hold multiple prescriptions, vitamins and other supplements.

Alarm Pill Organizer:?This organizer features a reminder alarm to help people take their medicine on time. The pill case is a weekly pillbox with one compartment per day and up to four daily alarms.?

Vitality?s AT&T connected GlowCaps:?These GlowCaps fit on standard prescription bottles and use light and sound reminders, which can be followed by a phone call or text message, so people don?t miss a medication dose. Each time the pill bottle is opened data is recorded and used to compile periodic progress reports that can be relayed to patients, caregivers, doctors and family members.

The Philips Medication Dispenser: This electronic voice output medication reminder and dispenser is designed for individuals with vision, memory or cognitive disabilities.? Medications are placed in a one-ounce plastic cup, loaded in the dispenser and administered as scheduled.? Caregivers can also monitor activity through Philips Monitoring report which is always available online.

Boomer: If an active baby boomer had to choose between purchasing an iPad or a laptop which one would you suggest and why?

Abramson: The iPad is a great choice, especially for mobile baby boomers looking for a user-friendly and lightweight computer to access their email, catch up on the news, search the web and shop. The iPad is easy to carry, store and use. There is also no need for a mouse or any additional devices to be attached. The iPad also allows users to zoom in on text, making it larger and easy to read.? Many boomers find the iPad easy to use and more intuitive than competitors.

Boomers should note that tablets, in general, are mainly content consumption devices rather than work stations. If you plan to type a lot of text or need a device to deliver large scale projects, a tablet may not be the right device.

Boomer: Which e-book reader would you recommend for boomers?

Abramson:? As e-readers become more popular, digital book sales continue to climb. In fact, online retail giant Amazon is now selling more e-books than hardcover books and paperback books combined.

According to a recent Pew Research Center report, boomers are a promising demographic for e-readers (and sellers of e-books), since they (specifically older boomers) are the most likely of any age group to make a purchase online.? Boomers are increasingly looking for large-print books, and the ability to change the font size of text on e-readers is very compelling. Additionally, some e-readers have features that give a voice to the words on the page and libraries now offer a free digital-book lending service.

Currently, the Amazon Kindle Fire would be my recommended e-reader tablet for baby boomers ? I especially like its crisp, hi-resolution multi-touch color?display.? With its $199 price tag, it has to be one of the cheapest tablet PCs running on the Google Android platform. It has a 7-inch screen, Wi-fi support for connectivity, USB ports and is extremely lightweight at 14.5 ounces. The battery life is around eight hours.

Boomer: What technology is available for boomers that live alone and need to reach help in an emergency?

Abramson:? New and improved technologies emphasize wellness, mobility, autonomy and social connectivity.?? These innovative products and services are promoting health and independence for aging baby boomers.? Here are a few of my favorite examples of new technology in the fall prevention and emergency monitoring space:

ActiveCare?Personal Assistant?Link: This one-touch system looks like a small cell phone with large buttons. With the push of a button boomers are connected to ActiveCare?s call center with specialists that can help with everything from calling an ambulance to calling a physician or family members. GPS is integral to the PAL system, allowing users? locations to be tracked at all times, and can detect if an individual has fallen.

eNeighbor Monitoring System:?This system is programmed to detect unusual activity in the home. A shower left running or a fridge that goes unopened for a day could trigger a phone call to the end user or a caregiver.? ??

GrandCare:?This system offers a comprehensive communication and monitoring system for active seniors combining aspects of home automation, online communications and healthcare (telehealth) in one flexible and user-friendly package.

BeClose: The device tracks your loved one?s daily routine by receiving information from discreet wireless sensors that are placed in various locations around the home (as well as a wearable alert button).? Caregivers have the freedom of knowing their aging loved one is safe because they are able to check on them at any time using a secure, private web page.? If there are any disruptions to daily life, the primary caregiver will be alerted immediately by phone, email or text message.

Boomer: Are there any electronic devices for boomers?who love to travel?

Abramson:? Baby boomers comprise an increasing share of the nation?s travel.? In fact, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, approximately 80% of leisure travel is comprised of baby boomers. Here are a few gadgets that will make your next trip a little less stressful and a lot more enjoyable!

Polaroid Zink?: This zero ink, 14 megapixel digital camera pops out a bordered and dated photo on the spot. And unlike its ?60s predecessor, the Z340 keeps a copy in memory so even if you lose the print you never lose the picture.

The Magellan Maestro 5310:?This portable GPS-based navigation system is specifically geared toward boomers: it features a larger screen and improved readability. Boomers can also use this GPS device to keep tabs on aging parents, especially those with dementia.

iLuv Dream Traveler:?This innovative product does away with hotel outlet challenges with a slim travel size combo power strip that included surge protection and a USB charger for up to six devices, including laptops, digital cameras, e-book readers, etc.

Cloud Camera 5000: This camera lets baby boomers keep an eye on their home while they?re away. The camera has a motorized pan and tilt base that you can access and control through the company?s?interface. Set motion-sensor triggers to email you alerts of any disturbances.

Boomer: With technology changing daily and new gadgets constantly hitting the market, what three things would you suggest?boomers look to purchase that may make their lives easier or more fun???

Abramson:? Health, leisure activities and socialization are three areas that boomer technology companies are focusing on and will continue to do so as baby boomers reach 65 and beyond.

Jawbone UP ? UP?is the app-powered wrist band that inspires you to feel better and live healthier?. It tracks every move you make, and will remind you to move more.? The sky-blue wristband measures activity, sleep and nutrition and downloads all the data collected to an app on your smartphone.? The battery lasts 10 days and even works in water.

Q i-wear:??These shatterproof sunglasses bring on the music via Bluetooth stereo earbuds while toning down the ambient noise. They also allow you to simultaneously take phone calls through a Blue-tooth enabled device.

Bionic Relief Grip Golf Gloves: The anatomical pad system of these gloves offer a? more secure grip with less effort, to reduce pain and hand fatigue for those with arthritis.

Study shows stagnating life expectancies in US

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Despite modest gains in lifespan over the past century, the United States still trails many of the world's countries when it comes to life expectancy, and its poorest citizens live approximately five years less than more affluent persons, according to a new study from Rice University and the University Colorado at Boulder.

The study, "Stagnating Life Expectancies and Future Prospects in an Age of Uncertainty," used time-series analysis to evaluate historical data on U.S. mortality from the Human Mortality Database. The study authors reviewed data from 1930 through 2000 to identify trends in mortality over time and forecast life expectancy to the year 2055. Their research will be published in an upcoming issue of Social Science Quarterly.

Although the researchers found that the U.S. can expect very moderate gains in coming years (less than an additional three years through 2055), the U.S. still trails its developed counterparts in life expectancy. For example, the average life expectancy in the U.S. for a person born today is is 78.49, which is significantly lower than people born in Monaco, Macau and Japan, which have the three highest life expectancies (89.68, 84.43 and 83.91 years, respectively). In addition, the most deprived U.S. citizens tend to live five years less than their more affluent countrymen, according to Justin Denney, Rice assistant professor of sociology, who was principal author for the study.

Denney said that in 1930, average life expectancy in the United States was 59.85. By 2000, it rose to 77.1 years. "But when broken down, these numbers show that those gains were mostly experienced between 1930 the 1950s and 1960s," he said. "Since that time, gains in life expectancy have flattened out.

"During periods of expansion in length of life, a similar expansion has occurred between more and less advantaged groups ? the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, inequality grows and life expectancy is dramatically impacted," Denney said. "And despite disproportionate spending on health care, life expectancy in the U.S. continues to fall down the ladder of international rankings of length of life. It goes to show that prosperity doesn't necessarily equal long-term health."

Denney said many of the chronic conditions that have led to smaller gains in life expectancy are more easily treated when people are more financially stable. He said the study shows "the ugly side of inequality," and he hopes it will draw attention to the fact that more needs to be done to address stagnating life expectancies in the U.S. and eliminate inequalities in the U.S.

"Even in uncertain times, it is important to look forward in preparing for the needs of future populations," Denney said. "The results presented here underscore the relevance of policy and health initiatives aimed at improving the nation's health and reveal important insight into possible limits to mortality improvement over the next five decades."

Facebook stock closes up for 3rd straight day

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock has had its third consecutive day of gains.

The stock increased $1.40, or 4.7 percent, to close Monday at $31.41. That's still down 17 percent from Facebook's IPO price of $38. Facebook began trading on May 18.

Facebook's stock has traded as low as $25.52 since the IPO.

Investors have been concerned about its ability to keep increasing revenue and make money from its growing mobile audience, though many analysts hold positive long-term opinions.

On Monday, it's disclosed that Facebook is bringing one of its long-term vendors, facial-recognition technology company Face.com, in-house. Facebook wouldn't say how much it paid or what its plans are for Face.com.

The Israeli company's technology helps people tag photos on the Web by figuring out who is in the pictures.
