Symantec: work on Stuxnet worm started two years earlier than first thought

Symantec work on Stuxnet worm started two years earlier than thought

Most of us think we know the tale of Stuxnet: it's a possibly government-sponsored worm that played havoc with Iranian centrifuges in 2009, setting back the country's uranium enrichment program without involving any traditional weapons. Researchers at Symantec, however, now claim there's an untold narrative. They've discovered a Stuxnet 0.5 version that may have been in development or active as soon as November 2005, two years before the commonly accepted timeline. It first surfaced on trackers in November 2007, and would have created wider-ranging chaos at Iran's Natanz nuclear facility by closing vital pressure valves instead of using the subtler centrifuge technique.

Symantec also noticed that this pre-1.0 malware shares traits with the Flamer code base, putting it in the context of an even larger effort than seen so far. Moreover, it would have required extensive knowledge of the Natanz infrastructure -- this was no casual attack, according to the researchers. While we may never know exactly what prompted the revamp, IAEA evidence suggests that Stuxnet wasn't truly effective until the better-known version came into play. We mostly know that modern cyberwarfare had its fair share of growing pains -- and that it's not as fresh-faced as we assumed.

PFT: Mathieu runs a fast 40? |? But bench is weak

NickKasaAP

Recently, we explained that NFL teams are curious as to whether Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te?o is gay.? Somehow, this reality was misinterpreted by some as being an official PFT position that this is a legitimate question, for Te?o or anyone else.

It isn?t.

But the NFL is a unique industry, both in good ways and in bad.? When it comes to outdated, intolerant views regarding the sexuality of its players, the NFL?s difference is that it doesn?t embrace diversity.

Case in point:? Colorado tight end Nick Kasa was asked a stream of questions that touched on sexual preference at the Scouting Combine.

?They ask you like, ?Do you have a girlfriend??? Are you married??? Do you like girls??? Kasa told ESPN Radio Denver on Tuesday.? ?Those kinds of things, and you know it was just kind of weird.? But they would ask you with a straight face, and it?s a pretty weird experience altogether.?

It?s more than weird.? It?s troubling.? While on one hand teams try to throw players off the prepared answers that make them seem as complex as a cardboard cutout, on the other hand that effort should be undertaken without touching on inappropriate subject matter.

The league should be troubled, too.? And the league should contact Kasa immediately, with a very specific follow-up question:? ?Which team(s) asked you that??

Ronda Rousey was more worried about her sports bra staying on than being submitted

During their main event bout at UFC 157, Liz Carmouche took Ronda Rousey's back and had her in a neck crank. The crank was so deep that Rousey inadvertently bit Carmouche's arm. But Rousey told the Fuel TV aftershow that she was never worried about submitting to Carmouche. Instead, she was concerned about a wardrobe malfunction.

?On the ground I feel so comfortable in every position, so I never feel in danger and I take a lot of risks. I felt fine with her on my back. I was more concerned with my sports bra staying on while she was choking me because I felt safe and in control," Rousey said.

Rousey won a bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics in judo, so submissions have been part of her life for a long time. In fact, Rousey has spoken often about how her mother taught her judo by waking her up with an armbar. While the neck crank was uncomfortable, it wasn't new.

What is new is having to worry about a sports bra not doing its job. Come on, sports bra. You had one job. Thankfully, it did stay in place, and Rousey went on to submit Carmouche seconds before the end of the first round.

Nexus One launched into space on CubeSat, becomes first PhoneSat in orbit (video)

Google's Nexus One has dreamt of space travel for a while now, but on Monday it was finally launched into orbit aboard a CubeSat dubbed STRaND-1, which was developed by Surrey Satellite Technology and the University of Surrey's Surrey Space Centre. STRaND-1 now holds the honor of being the first PhoneSat and UK CubeSat that has made it into orbit. Alongside the HTC-made handset are an altitude and orbit control system, two propulsion setups and a Linux-based computer with a "high-speed" processor. After the Tux-friendly rig conducts a battery of tests, it'll relinquish control of much of the satellite's functions to the smartphone, which still runs Android.

Not only will the mission test how commercial, off-the-shelf tech can survive in the vacuum and conduct experiments, but it'll squeeze in some fun courtesy of apps developed by winners of a competition held last year. An app called 360 will let folks back on terra firma request their own snapshots of earth taken with the phone's shooter and pin them to a map. Ridley Scott might like to say no one can hear you scream in space, but another application loaded onto the device will put that to the test by playing user-submitted shrieks and recording them with the handset's microphone as they playback. Hit the break for more details and a brief video overview of the satellite, or jab the more coverage links to partake in the app shenanigans.

Remains of the Day: iOS 6.1.3 May Kill the Evasi0n JailbreakAn iOS 6 update may render the current jailbreak ineffective, App.net launches free accounts, two big prepaid carriers get LTE, and a Google patches a huge vulnerability.

  • Apple Is Beta-Testing An Update That Kills Evasi0n Jailbreak According David Wang, one of the iOS hackers who wrote the evasi0n jailbreak for iOS 6, the beta for iOS 6.1.3 will patch at least one of the vulnerabilities that the evasi0n exploits in order to work. After 6.1.3, Wang stated that they may have to build a new jailbreak from scratch. Reports indicate that iOS 6.1.3 will also fix the passcode bug that's gone unpatched since 6.0.1 as well as the newly-discovered passcode bug in 6.1. [Forbes]
  • App.net Introduces Free Tier, Invite-Only for Now, Includes Following 40 People App.net, the ad-free social network with a great privacy policy has just launched a free tier of service. Currently invite-only, the invitations will be distributed to current paying members and will allow free users to follow up to 40 accounts and provide 500MB of storage. [The Next Web]
  • Virgin and Boost Add LTE Handsets to Their Pre-Paid Rosters Virgin and Boost Mobile will be getting their first LTE phones running on Sprint's 4G network. Virgin Mobile customers can purchase the Samsung Galaxy Victory starting today, while Boost users can buy the HTC One SV or the Boost Force beginning March 7th. [Engadget]
  • Bypassing Google's Two-Factor Authentication Last summer a vulnerability was found in Google's login process that allowed two-factor authentication to be completely bypassed. The exploit took advantage of how Google's application-specific passwords were set up to gain complete access to a victim's Google account. Google addressed the vulnerability last week, and you can read Duo Security's findings today.

Do You Believe In Quick Golf Fixes? | Content for Reprint

Author: RoseannaLeaton | Total views: 119 Comments: 0
Word Count: 597 Date:

One of the key aspects about the sport called golf is that without a considerable amount of practice you can find hitting the ball as you wish is a somewhat elusive dream!? This tends to hold true for both beginners and the more seasoned golfer.? Thus it is no wonder that so many golfers avidly seek to find any or every type of quick golf fix that they can feast their eyes or lay their hands upon.

?

?

The million-dollar question is whether or not such quick golf fixes have a hope of working.? I suspect that the majority of golfers soon discover that whilst their currently favored fix might work to a degree for a short period of time, its effectiveness quickly fades and disappears.?

?

?

Fewer golfers hold an appreciation of the very real potential for the supposed "quick fix" to morph into a golf nightmare.? Unless you fully understand the how and why of a swing change, be it related to rhythm, tempo, swing plane, wrist cock, length of backswing or follow through, etc., you are running the risk of making a change that puts you further off course than on.??

?

?

Additionally most "quick" golf fixes are not actually quick to apply.? The various parts of your golf swing are linked together like a row of dominoes.? As you change one tiny little component, be it by just a fraction of a millimeter, it will inevitably affect every domino along the line.? Most golfers will be only too aware of those times when they feel like their swing has totally collapsed.? You do not ever want that to happen again.

?

?

The exception to this rule applies to mental focus.? You can in fact change your mind about something literally "at a moment's notice".? Women are frequently accused of this; it is a woman's prerogative to change her mind!?

?

?

In golf, the application of correct mental focus will prove to be a very effective fix indeed.? With your attention correctly placed and your emotions kept under control, the numbers written upon your scorecard are likely to be very pleasing indeed.? What is even better is that there is no negative side effect.? Correct mental focus simply cannot cause your game to fall apart!

?

?

But, if you forget to focus or apply your mind correctly, then you will miss out upon the advantages that this confers to your current shot.?? Even though you can change your mind in an instant, and gain good mental focus simply by thinking about it, what really pays off is to make this ideal focus into a habit.?

?

?

The creation of a habit, even one that is mental in nature, is not a quick fix.? It takes time and effort.? But this time and effort put into the mental side of golf is worth its weight in gold.? It is also something that can be worked upon at home or in the dark and for just a few minutes at a time.

Far from the courtroom drama that has gripped South Africa, the family of Pistorius' slain girlfriend, Steenkamp, has struggled with its own private deluge of grief, frustration and bewilderment. The victim's relatives also harbor misgivings about efforts by the Olympian's family to reach out to them with condolences. JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The family lawyer of Oscar Pistorius says the brother of the Olympic paraplegic athlete is facing culpable homicide charge in a 2010 road death.

Laywer Kenny Oldwage would not confirm details of the case Carl Pistorius is facing, but Sunday's development is compounding the problems for the family after Oscar was charged with premeditated murder in the Feb. 14 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Local media reported that Carl Pistorius was allegedly involved in a crash with a woman motorcyclist and that he was to face trial last Thursday, as his brother Oscar was facing a bail hearing.

Oscar Pistorius was released on bail Friday and his brother Carl was seen driving into the affluent villa of their uncle Arnold early Sunday, where Oscar is staying while on bail.

Iran says it has captured a foreign 'enemy drone'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard says it has captured a foreign unmanned aircraft during a military exercise in southern Iran.

The official IRNA news agency on Saturday quoted Gen. Hamid Sarkheili as saying that the Guard's electronic warfare unit spotted signals indicating that foreign drones were trying to enter Iranian airspace. Sarkheili, a spokesman for the military exercise, says Guard experts took control of one drone and brought it down near the city of Sirjan where the exercise is being held.

Sarkheili didn't say if the drone was American. He referred to it only as a "foreign enemy drone."

Iran has claimed to have captured several U.S. drones, including a RQ-170 Sentinel advanced drone in December 2011 and at least three ScanEagle aircraft.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- The old adage is that to be the best, you have to beat the best. That certainly seems to be the case so far for the No. 1 Oklahoma softball team.

In defeating No. 23 Florida State, 6-0, on Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the Sooners improved to 15-0 on the season and 7-0 against ranked teams. In those seven wins, Oklahoma has outscored its opponents 47-0.

Oklahoma opened the scoring on Saturday in the second inning.

Shelby Pendley led off with a double that got under the glove of a diving Morgan Bullock in center field. After moving to third on a groundout, Pendley came home when Destinee Martinez doubled into the gap in left center.

Martinez came all the way around to score on the play when Florida State left fielder Kirstin Austin committed a throwing error as she threw the ball out of play.

The runs proved to be all the support that Keilani Ricketts needed in the circle.

In improving to 7-0, the senior struck out 11 and allowed just a lone single in the first inning as she threw her sixth shutout of the season and lowered her earned run average to just 0.78.

Ricketts and the Sooners retired the final 16 Seminoles batters of the game, not allowing a base runner beyond the second inning.

The Sooners' 2-0 lead doubled in the third inning as Georgia Casey reached on a one-out bunt single and came all the way around to score when Jessica Shults followed with a sharp grounder through the left side that ran to the wall for a double.

In the fifth inning, Lauren Chamberlain ripped a line drive home run over the fence in left center field for her eighth homer of the year and 38th of her career.

Oklahoma took advantage of a Florida State error in the fifth to make it 6-0.

Shults reached on a throwing error by Seminoles third baseman Briana Hamilton. After a wild pitch and a groundout, Pendley advanced Shults to third with a single through the right side. Williams then grounded out to first base, unassisted to plate Shults.

After playing their first 15 games away from Norman, the Sooners play their first home game this Friday as part of its Spring Preview Tournament. OU faces Nebraska on Friday in Norman at 6 p.m., before taking on Houston and the Cornhuskers in Oklahoma City on Saturday. A final contest against the Cougars rounds out play on Sunday.

NJ Sandy milestone: Last shuttered town reopens

MANTOLOKING, N.J. (AP) ? For the first time in almost four months, residents are living again in Mantoloking, a well-off New Jersey beach town that suffered some of the worst of Superstorm Sandy's wrath.

Town officials allowed residents to return Friday to stay. It's the last New Jersey community to hit that milestone since the storm.

"It's a wonderful feeling to be back in your own home after four months of not knowing what your future is," said Sandra Witkowski, who returned with her husband, Stan.

But it's also difficult to be in a place with such devastation. When she looks out her window, Witkowski sees one house wrecked by the storm and bare land where another used to be.

All 521 homes in the community an hour and a half's drive south of New York City were damaged. About 60 were swept away entirely and hundreds more will have to be demolished. Most of the homes are grand summer getaways. Only about 100 residents typically stay through the winter.

The community, 2?-miles long and just a couple blocks wide with the Atlantic Ocean on the east and Barnegat Bay on the west, was cut in two by an inlet during the storm. That was fixed quickly, and Route 35, the main road through the barrier island community, has also reopened after repairs.

Across New Jersey, the storm destroyed about 30,000 homes and caused an estimated $37 billion in damage.

The destruction in Mantoloking meant that not many residents were able to take advantage of the permission to return on Friday.

"It's quiet in the winter, which we like," Sandra Witkowski said. But now? "It's really quiet."

The Witkowskis' home needed major repairs to the electrical and other systems, but because it's built on pilings, water did not get into the house.

The retired couple has been staying with their daughter's family, which meant adjusting to living with two teenagers.

Doug Popaca said he was full of anticipation about returning. He said he and his wife, Joyce, awoke every hour through the night before deciding at 5 a.m. that it was OK to get up and head home.

"It was almost like Christmas, you know, when you're expecting a good gift," Popaca said. "You can't sleep. You keep waking up hoping it's daytime."

Popaca said all of the utilities in the house are up and running, a requirement for residents to be able to inhabit their homes permanently again.

The Popacas had been staying in a small summer cottage in nearby Brick that they rented on a month-by-month basis.

Popaca said while the cottage was warm and dry, it was much smaller than their home. He said they are looking forward to using their full-size appliances and shower.

"And of course sleeping in your own bed," Popaca said.

He said the first thing they did after going home was laundry. The next step would be cleaning ? a relatively easy task considering what others in the area are dealing with.

"While we're very happy and very lucky to be back," Popaca said, "there is still that feeling that other people are suffering."

Golf-Thai duo share lead after first round in Myanmar

Thu Feb 21, 2013 6:50pm IST

Feb 21 (Reuters) - Big-hitting Thailand duo Chapchai Nirat and Kiradech Aphibarnrat made full use of low-scoring conditions to share the lead after the opening round of the Myanmar Open on Thursday.

Both Chapchai and Kiradech hit eight-under 64s to take a one-shot lead in the $300,000 event, the first on the Asian Tour calendar, at the Royal Mingalardon Golf and Country Club.

Another Thai player, Prom Meesawat, and Joonas Granberg of Finland closed the day tied in third place, one shot behind at seven-under 65.

Three-times Asian Tour winner Chapchai, 29, combined nine birdies with one bogey in his round.

"My putting was very good. Last year I struggled with my putter. Usually when you start the first tournament, you feel a bit uneasy but it was different today," he said. "Putting is very important for me. If I can putt well, I feel confident.

"The fairways and greens are quite big but the greens are undulating so your iron shots need to be accurate."

Reigning Tour winner Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand had the honour of teeing off first to start the season and settled for a one-under 71.

Kiradech, who last year lost the playoff final to Kieran Pratt of Australia at the same event, mixed six birdies and an eagle during a spotless round.

"I think the course is the same as last year but my game is better than last year," the 23-year-old said.

"This year I'm hitting it better. The greens are faster and smoother though." (Reporting by Sudipto Ganguly in Mumbai; editing by Clare Fallon)

Doctors list overused medical treatments

WASHINGTON ? Nearly 100 medical procedures, tests and therapies are overused and often unnecessary, a coalition of leading medical societies says in a new report aimed at improving healthcare and controlling runaway costs.

The medical interventions ? including early caesarean deliveries, CT scans for head injuries in children and annual Pap tests for middle-aged women ? may be necessary in some cases, the physician groups said. But often they are not beneficial and may even cause harm.

"We are very concerned about the rapidly escalating cost of healthcare," said Dr. Bruce Sigsbee, president of the American Academy of Neurology, which was among the 17 medical groups contributing to the list of procedures. "This is not healthy for the country, and something has to be done."

Development of the list, which was organized by the American Board of Internal Medicine's ABIM Foundation, is a minor milestone in efforts to enlist physicians to rein in unnecessary services, a leading cause of the skyrocketing healthcare tab.

In 2011, the ABIM Foundation published a similar list of procedures submitted by nine other medical societies as part of its Choosing Wisely campaign.

The United States spends more than $2.5 trillion a year on healthcare, or more than $8,000 per person. That is 21/2 times as much as the average spent by other industrialized nations, according to data collected by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, whose members include the richest nations.

Studies show that the high cost of U.S. healthcare is driven in large part by prices. American hospitals and doctors charge much more than their international counterparts.

But U.S. physicians also perform many more tests and elective procedures. For example, American doctors order nearly twice as many CT and MRI exams as doctors in other industrialized countries do. They perform more knee replacements and deliver more babies by caesarean section.

Some of this extra care may result in better outcomes. The U.S. has some of the highest cancer survival rates in the world, for instance.

But America lags far behind other industrialized countries in caring for children with asthma and adults with chronic bronchitis and emphysema, among other illnesses.

A growing number of experts have concluded that much medical care in the U.S. is wasteful and even dangerous for patients. A 2012 report from the independent Institute of Medicine estimated total waste in the system at 30%, or $750 billion a year.

"Millions of Americans are increasingly realizing that when it comes to healthcare, more is not necessarily better," said Dr. Christine K. Cassel, president of the ABIM Foundation.

For example, despite the popularity of early caesareans, there is growing evidence that babies born before 39 weeks' gestation have higher risks of learning disabilities and even death.

Whether, or how quickly, the initiative to curb unnecessary procedures will yield results remains unclear.

Persuading doctors to be more conservative can be difficult, said Dr. Lowell E. Schnipper, an oncologist at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and chairman of a national task force on controlling the cost of cancer care. "These diseases can be fatal," Schnipper said. "The stakes are high. And families very often push the doctor, who wants to take care of the patient as best he or she can."

Recent warnings from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force that screenings for breast and prostate cancers often do more harm than good drew huge backlashes from patient advocates. Similarly, the Obama administration's efforts to raise awareness about unnecessary medical care and to improve data on best medical practices as part of the 2010 healthcare law prompted many Republicans to characterize the ideas as rationing.

But Dr. Manoj Jain, a leading health quality advocate in Memphis, Tenn., said more aggressive efforts may be needed to reduce wasteful and dangerous medical practices.

Like many experts, Jain advocates more evaluation of physicians and new ways to pay for healthcare that reward better outcomes and higher efficiency instead of the current fee-for-service system, which pays doctors for every procedure they do.

"If we really are going to bend the cost curve, we have to get really serious," Jain said.

Among the medical societies that identified overused procedures prescribed by their members were the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

The ABIM Foundation effort also drew support from leading consumer and business groups, including Consumer Reports, the AARP and the National Business Group on Health.

When children can hop on one leg: Motor development in children under 5 can now be tested reliably

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Motor development in children under five years of age can now be tested reliably: Together with colleagues from Lausanne, researchers from the University Children's Hospital Zurich and the University of Zurich have determined normative data for different exercises such as hopping or running. This enables parents and experts to gauge the motor skills of young children for the first time objectively and thus identify abnormalities at an early stage.

My child still can't stand on one leg or walk down the stairs in alternating steps while all the other children already can. Are my child's motor skills normal or does he need therapy? Parents of children of a pre-school age often ask questions like these and experts wonder from which age a child should really be able to perform certain motor tasks.

Until now, there has been a lack of reliable data that describes the age from which children are able to stand on one leg, hop on one leg, climb stairs or run. Such standards have been lacking as it was assumed that motor performance in children under the age of five could not be measured reliably. For children aged between five and eighteen, however, there is an instrument called the Zurich Motor Assessment created by Remo Largo and his team at the University Children's Hospital Zurich in 2001. This test procedure is used by many experts to examine neuromotor skills in children of a school age.

New tests for young children

Neurophysiologist Tanja Kakebeeke and developmental pediatrician Oskar Jenni from the University Children's Hospital Zurich have now extended this test, simplified it for pre-school children aged between three and five and collected normative data for this age group. The test contains gross and fine motor exercises and additional tasks where children are supposed to run, hop, climb stairs and balance.

The tests described in their study reveal that young pre-school children are not yet able to perform certain tasks such as hopping or standing on one leg for longer than two seconds. "Children develop these skills between the age of three and five but very quickly and they are able to at the age of five," explains Kakebeeke.

At the age of three, only forty percent of the children were able to stand on one leg briefly. At five years of age, they all could. As soon as a child was able to do a task and his or her performance was measurable, it was classified on a five-point scale. The best performance, for example, was thus: The child can stand on one leg -- the right and the left -- for longer than five seconds. The normative data then developed from the proportion of children who can perform a skill and the actual performance of these children. With the normative data, motor development abnormalities can now be diagnosed at an early stage and therapeutic measures initiated.

Scientists turn to real-life 3-D holodecks

University of Illinois-Chicago computer scientist Jason Leigh stands in the CAVE2 virtual-reality system, where 72 stereoscopic liquid crystal display panels encircle the viewer.

By Carla K. Johnson, The Associated Press

CHICAGO ??Take a walk through a human brain? Fly over the surface of Mars? Computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Chicago are pushing science fiction closer to reality with a wraparound virtual world where a researcher wearing 3-D glasses can do all that and more.

In the system, known as CAVE2, an 8-foot-high (2.4-meter-high) screen encircles the viewer 320 degrees. A panorama of images springs from 72 stereoscopic liquid crystal display panels, conveying a dizzying sense of being able to touch what's not really there.

As far back as 1950, sci-fi author Ray Bradbury imagined a children's nursery that could make bedtime stories disturbingly real. "Star Trek" fans might remember the holodeck as the virtual playground where the fictional Enterprise crew relaxed in fantasy worlds.

The Illinois computer scientists have more serious matters in mind when they hand visitors 3-D glasses and a controller called a "wand." Scientists in many fields today share a common challenge: How to truly understand overwhelming amounts of data. Jason Leigh, co-inventor of the CAVE2 virtual reality system, believes this technology answers that challenge.

"In the next five years, we anticipate using the CAVE to look at really large-scale data to help scientists make sense of that information. CAVEs are essentially fantastic lenses for bringing data into focus," Leigh said.

The CAVE2 virtual world could change the way doctors are trained and improve patient care, Leigh said. Pharmaceutical researchers could use it to model the way new drugs bind to proteins in the human body. Car designers could virtually "drive" their vehicle designs.

Imagine turning massive amounts of data ? the forces behind a hurricane, for example ? into a simulation that a weather researcher could enlarge and explore from the inside. Architects could walk through their skyscrapers before they are built. Surgeons could rehearse a procedure using data from an individual patient.

Charles Rex Arbogast / AP

Brain surgeon Ali Alaraj talks about the first time he viewed the brain using the CAVE2. "You can walk between the blood vessels," said the University of Illinois College of Medicine neurosurgeon. "You can look at the arteries from below. You can look at the arteries from the side."

CAVEs aren't cheap
But the size and expense of room-based virtual reality systems may prove insurmountable barriers to widespread use, said Henry Fuchs, a computer science professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who is familiar with the CAVE technology but wasn't involved in its development.

While he calls the CAVE2 "a national treasure," Fuchs predicts a smaller technology such as Google's Internet-connected eyeglasses will do more to revolutionize medicine than the CAVE. Still, he says large displays are the best way today for people to interact and collaborate.

Believers include the people at Marshalltown, Iowa-based Mechdyne Corp., which has licensed the CAVE2 technology for three years and plans to market it to hospitals, the military and in the oil and gas industry, said Kurt Hoffmeister of Mechdyne.

In Chicago, researchers and graduate students are creating virtual scenarios for testing in the CAVE2. The Mars flyover is created from real NASA data. The brain tour is based on the layout of blood vessels in a real patient.

Brain surgeon Ali Alaraj remembered the first time he viewed the brain using the CAVE2.

"You can walk between the blood vessels," said the University of Illinois College of Medicine neurosurgeon. "You can look at the arteries from below. You can look at the arteries from the side.... That was science fiction for me."

How CAVEs compare
Would doctors process information faster with fewer errors using CAVE2? That's the question behind a proposed study that would compare CAVE2 to conventional methods of detecting brain aneurysms and determining proper treatment, said Andreas Linninger, UIC professor of bioengineering, chemical engineering and computer science.

But it's not all serious business at the lab.

In his spare time during the past two years, research assistant Arthur Nishimoto has been programming the CAVE2 computer with the specifications for the fictional Starship Enterprise. He now can walk around his life-size re-creation of the TV spacecraft.

The original technology, introduced in the early 1990s, was called CAVE, which stood for Cave Automatic Virtual Environment and also cleverly referred to Plato's cave, the philosopher's analogy about shadows and reality. It was named by former lab co-directors Tom DeFanti and Dan Sandin.

The second generation of the CAVE, invented by Leigh and his collaborator Andy Johnson, has higher resolution. The project was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.

"It's fantastic to come to work. Every day is like getting to live a science fiction dream," Leigh said. "To do science in this kind of environment is absolutely amazing."

(AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez returned home to Venezuela early Monday after more than two months of medical treatment in Cuba following cancer surgery.

Chavez's return was announced in a series of message on his Twitter account, saying "we will continue our treatment here."

"We've arrived once again in our Venezuelan homeland. Thank you, my God!!" the first of the three messages said.

They were the first messages to appear on Chavez's Twitter account since Nov. 1.

"I'm clinging to Christ and trusting in my doctors and nurses," Chavez said in another tweet. "Onward toward victory always!! We will live and we will triumph!!"

Vice President Nicolas Maduro said on television that Chavez at arrived at 2:30 a.m. and was taken to the Carlos Arvelo Military Hospital in Caracas, where he will continue his treatment.

Chavez also thanked Fidel and Raul Castro, who have overseen his treatment in Cuba, and thanked his country's people "for so much love."

Chavez's return to Caracas came less than three days after the government released the first photos of the president in more than two months, showing images of him smiling alongside his daughters.

"We're very happy," Maduro said. He said the president had arrived together with his eldest daughter, Rosa.

The vice president didn't give additional details about Chavez's condition, saying only that he has been in a "continuous battle."

The 58-year-old president hasn't spoken publicly since he left for Cuba on Dec. 10. He underwent his fourth cancer-related surgery on Dec. 11, and the government says that he is now breathing through a tracheal tube that makes talking difficult.

Chavez is also undergoing other treatments that have not been specified.

He has been receiving cancer treatment in Cuba on-and-off since June 2011. Chavez has said he has had tumors removed from his pelvic region and has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Throughout the treatments, Chavez has not revealed the type of cancer or the exact location of the tumors.

Chavez was re-elected to a new six-year term in October, and his inauguration had been scheduled for Jan. 10 but was indefinitely postponed by lawmakers due to his condition after the surgery, which the government has described as delicate.
