The Winston-Salem State Rams will play in their first NCAA Division II national championship game next weekend after a victory Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium.
The Rams defeated West Texas A&M 41-18 in the national semifinal. The win improved the Rams to 14-0, breaking the school record for most wins in a season.
The Buffaloes scored only 21 seconds into the game following a long kickoff return, but the Rams scored 20 unanswered to take a 13-point halftime lead and never trailed again.
The Rams finished with more than 500 yards of total offense. Quarterback Kameron Smith threw for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran in another score in his first full game after a shoulder injury. Maurice Lewis ran for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries.
Their national championship opponent will be the Valdosta State Blazers out of Georgia. The two will square off at 1 p.m. Dec. 15 in Florence, Ala., and it will be shown live on ESPN2. Saturday's game could not be seen live on television, but it could be seen live online.
If WSSU wins next week, it would become the first historically black college to win a D-II national championship in football. WSSU was the first HBCU team to win an NCAA basketball title in 1967.
After a 20-year playoff drought, the Rams made the national semifinals for the second year in a row. WSSU lost to Wayne State 21-14 in last year's semifinal at Bowman Gray.
