Pictures do not due the chicken justice, especially poor quality phone pictures.
Everyone knows the legendary status of Federal Donuts: Inventive donuts, delicious fried chicken, and near-immediate sell-out of said chicken. Well, with the official opening of a second location (1632 Sansom Street) tomorrow, maybe the wait times and sell-outs will be alleviated.
The same great food is available at the second location, including delicious donuts made by this post-apocalyptic treat creator, the Donut Robot Mark II:
Of those donuts, we were able to sample Turkish Mocha, Strawberry-Fennel, Vanilla Spice, Mint Chocolate Cookie, Lemon Bar, and Green Tea-Sesame. They all taste exactly how they are described (also served warm, soft, and just plain great), but the hot fresh ones (Turkish, Fennel, and Vanilla) really stand out. We know dozen orders of donuts are meant to be shared, but these had us questioning that logic.
And when it comes to the chicken, we accidentally grabbed two pieces of the same kind (Cowboy Coffee dry blend), but really didn?t care. The fried bird tasted like you crumbled up a whole bunch of BBQ chips in your hand and shoved them in your mouth, only to discover delicious, juicy, and tender chicken was hiding inside the whole time, which we wish would happen more often.
The soft open was this morning, and it only took a handful of hours to run out of chicken wings, so if you want to make sure you get the birds while the gettin? is good, you?ll want to swing by as close to the 11AM serving time as possible. And yes, it?s worth it. Federal Donuts is open 7AM to 7PM.
