CPI International To Acquire Codan Satcom | NEWS.GNOM.ES

PALO ALTO, Calif. and NEWTON, South Australia, May 30, 2012 /NEWS.GNOM.ES/ ? CPI International Holding Corp. and its wholly owned subsidiary CPI International, Inc. (CPI), a leading provider of microwave, radio frequency (RF), power and control solutions for critical defense, communications, medical and other applications, today announced they have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Codan Satcom business from Codan Limited (ASX: CDA).? Codan Satcom is a prominent supplier of solid-state RF subsystems for satellite communications services to commercial and government end users.? Codan Satcom has operations in Newton, South Australia and Boalsburg, Pa.

Under the terms of the agreement, CPI will acquire Codan Satcom for a payment of $9.0 million in cash, subject to certain adjustments, to be funded entirely from cash on hand.? If certain financial and other objectives are achieved in the two years following the acquisition, CPI has also agreed to make additional earnout payments to Codan of up to $4.5 million.? CPI will acquire certain of the Australian-based assets of Codan Satcom, as well as Codan Satcom?s Pennsylvania-based Locus Microwave operations.? The Pennsylvania-based operations were formerly Locus Microwave, Inc., a manufacturer of microwave radio products for satellite communications, before that company was acquired by Codan Limited in April 2009.

CPI intends to integrate the Codan Satcom business into its Communications & Medical Products Division in Ontario, Canada.? The Australian-based operations of Codan Satcom, which design and manufacture C-band and Ku-band subsystems and block-up converters (BUCs), will be relocated to CPI?s existing Canadian facilities over a period of approximately nine months.? The Pennsylvania-based Locus Microwave operations, which design and manufacture X-band and Ku-band BUCs, primarily for military communications applications, will remain in their current location and are expected to expand as CPI increases the capabilities of those operations.? CPI plans to retain a number of key research and development personnel from the Australian-based operations and establish a local engineering center for these employees.

Backup power probed at ailing Cal nuke plant

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The troubled San Onofre nuclear power plant operated for three decades with equipment that might have temporarily cut off the plant's emergency power supply in the event of an earthquake, government filings revealed Tuesday.

The disclosure by Southern California Edison about a possible backup power problem comes amid a probe into excessive wear on tubing that has sidelined the seaside plant for nearly four months.

The company disabled the equipment, a vibration sensor, and reported to federal regulators that the problem was being analyzed as a threat to plant safety. Other back-up systems were in place during that time.

"Engineers are continuing to analyze the condition and have not reached a final conclusion if the sensor would actually cause a shutdown during an earthquake," a company statement said.

A steady supply of electricity is a critical issue at nuclear plants, which need power to control heat in the reactors. A tsunami destroyed backup generators at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant ? setting off the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

At issue at San Onofre is a vibration sensor in use since 1981 on emergency diesel generators, which start if the plant's outside power is cut ? a possibility during an earthquake.

Engineers found the sensor ? designed to protect components inside the generators during operation ? might incorrectly stop them during an earthquake or an aftershock.

According to records filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Edison engineers are looking into whether "high vibration ... could interrupt the onsite electrical generation" during a temblor.

If the generators fail, the plant can use battery power for up to four hours to operate steam generators to cool the twin reactors.

The plant between Los Angeles and San Diego has been dark since January while investigators try to determine why tubing that carries radioactive water in relatively new steam generators eroded at an unusual rate, in some cases rapidly.

Gradual wear is common in such tubing, but the rate of erosion in some tubes at San Onofre alarmed officials since the equipment is relatively new. The company has said 1,300 tubes will be taken out of service, although the number is well within the margin to allow the generators to keep operating.

Edison initially targeted a June restart for at least one of the twin reactors, but that appears increasingly unlikely as investigators continue to review the widespread problem.

IMF tells Ukraine to hike gas bills for households

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? The International Monetary fund has told Ukraine it must raise gas and heating prices for households if it is to regain access to a $15.6 bailout loan from the fund.

The government of President Viktor Yanukovych has been reluctant to make the unpopular move ahead of parliamentary elections in October. That led the IMF to freeze the bailout program last spring.

The head of the IMF mission to Ukraine, Chris Jarvis, notes Ukrainian families currently pay one-fifth of the import price for natural gas.

He told reporters on Monday that the Fund will resume talks only after "some actions from the government."

Ukraine is hoping to get a price discount for Russian natural gas, but talks with Moscow have been unsuccessful so far.

Blockhawk.com Beta Launches Simpler, Easier Real Estate Search

Blockhawk.com is announcing today the beta launch of a site intended to make searching for New York real estate, easier, faster, simpler and perhaps more joyous than other sites on the web.

The site was founded as a pet project by a number of New York area entrepreneurs. One of its Co-Founders, Jason White, explains: I had always felt the process of searching for homes and apartments online was cluttered, slow, unfriendly, and often quite difficult, even for sophisticated users. White adds that it bothered [him] because shelter is a universal need. People spend an inordinate amount of time and income on real estate and deserve a much better search experience.

In 2011, White, an entrepreneur who has launched other ventures online, got together with some engineers, designers, and colleagues from the real estate sector and began to focus on the problem. The goal was to see if, on a shoe string, a simpler, better consumer home or apartment-hunting experience could be developed. A bare bones site was quickly released to collect user feedback and test various hypotheses.

In a short time, the alpha site, which in Whites words was so crude we were too embarrassed to tell anyone about it, was attracting significant traffic without any marketing whatsoever. This validated that a larger opportunity was at hand.

Studying the Market

For nearly half a year, the team used its alpha site as a laboratory environment to study how consumers researched homes and apartments and to test ideas. The data collected was used to inform the new type of real estate website that was beta released this week.

Central to this initial release is the ability for consumers to search home and apartment sales and rentals by selecting from a multitude of filters, including the age of the building, whether its price has been reduced, or whether, for example, one can see water views from its windows. Such filters are not new. But allowing consumers to search across so many spectra without producing a slow or cluttered user experience is novel, even compered to the largest real estate sites online.

Another feature of Blockhawk is in how listings and other data are displayed. Pages are simpler and friendlier to navigate. Images are large. The result is an experience in which consumers can more quickly get to the results they seek, and avoid wasting time looking at information that isnt relevant.

Freshest Data

The site also boasts extremely fresh and comprehensive data. In addition to showcasing New York real estate listings in the friendliest possible way, Blockhawk provides full listings for the five boroughs and is updated as often as 12 times a day. This assures consumers their visits will be rewarded with the most up to date content anywhere.

All of which is just the beginning. Blockhawk plans to release a host of innovative, disruptive, and consumer obsessed products and features in the months ahead.

As for its current focus on New York area property listings, Jason White explains that Nothing is settled at this point. In its short life thus far, Blockhawk has received repeated requests that it expand to other markets. To be clear, White says were listening.

Acer C120 Projector

While most micro-projector makers these days are trying to fit as many ports for different connectivity sources as possible into their products' tiny frames, Acer took the opposite tack with its C120 Projector ($299.99 list). This pico projector connects via USB?and USB alone?to a computer, emulating whatever's on your computer screen. In that respect it resembles some budget projectors we've seen such as the 15-lumen Ray LiteRay Lite ($159 direct, 3 stars), but the Acer is considerably brighter and easier to set up (though not necessarily to run).

The C120 is an LED-based DLP projector with a native WVGA resolution (854 by 480). Its rated brightness is 100 lumens, which puts it among the pocket projector elite. The only other 100-lumen pico projector we've reviewed is the Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street, 3 stars).

The C120 is a handsome little projector, black (glossy on top) and rectangular with rounded corners. It fits in my pants pocket, but just barely. I weighed it on our postage scale at 6 ounces; adding the power adapter brought the total weight up to just 13 ounces. The focus wheel is on the side, next to the lens, which I find preferable to it being in front of the lens, at least for avoiding obstructing the light path with a stray finger. The wheel, though, is very small, and I found it hard to bring the image to a precise focus.

The Optoma PK320 provides a much broader range of connectivity choices, including HDMI, VGA, and composite video. It can also run presentations from internal memory, a micro-SD card, or a USB thumb drive.

Installation and Operation
The projector can be powered either through an AC adapter or over a computer's USB connection. It comes with a USB cable that plugs into the projector with a USB 3.0 connector. It's a Y cable with 2 USB B-type plugs for the computer, so you can run power and data over the cable. You do take a hit in brightness when you power the projector over the USB cable.

When you plug the C120 into a computer's USB port, the projector installs a driver on your system. You have to agree to the installation by clicking the appropriate button in a pop-up window, each time you use the projector. I used the projector with 3 laptops, and was able to run it on all three. However, for one of them I could only get it running some of the time, and wasn't able to determine why it didn't consistently work. Also, regardless of which laptop I used, the USB connection seemed finicky and the connection was occasionally lost. Unplugging and the re-plugging the cables in resolved this for the most part.

When I'd install the driver, it would resize the laptop's screen to 800 by 600 pixels, closer to the projector's native resolution. One can then resize the screen through the Windows Control Panel; the projector supports resolutions of up to 1,280 by 800 and did okay at that resolution, though the image looked better at the lower resolution.

Testing
The projector threw an image about 6 feet diagonal to fill our test screen from about 8 feet away. Although it looked okay in the dark, it was somewhat degraded with modest ambient light, so I did most of the testing with the image size about 4 feet diagonal.

I found the C120's image quality fine for internal business presentations (such as to small workgroups). You could use it for road presentations in a pinch, if you can verify that it will connect smoothly to your laptop via USB?for this projector, USB is the only game in town. Colors seemed reasonably true; there were hints of the rainbow effect common to DLP projectors in which bright areas against dark backgrounds may break up into little blue-green rainbows. Focus seemed slightly soft, and text wasn't very sharp. Video quality was okay for running short clips as part of a presentation.

A USB-only pico projector?and the C120 is unusually bright as such?offers the advantage of low price and?at least in theory?simple setup and operation. Downsides are that it's not as versatile as a full-featured model such as the Optoma PK320, and it's a one-trick pony?if you have problems connecting via USB, you don't have any other options. (If the C120's driver doesn't load, rebooting the laptop will sometimes resolve it?though you wouldn't want to have to do that when you're time pressed and presenting to a small group while on the road.) You don't want to misplace the USB Y-cable, as cables with USB 3.0 plugs aren't as easy to find as the earlier cables.

If USB connectivity is all you're looking for in a pico projector, the Acer C120 may well be your model of choice. It's considerably brighter than the Ray Lite and other USB-only projectors we've looked at, and less expensive than fuller featured models.

Job Summary: The Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA) is accountable as the chief academic officer providing executive oversight and strategic guidance in the planning, development, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of all aspects of academic programming at Laramie County Community College (LCCC). The VPAA provides oversight to the Colleges academic support areas such as the Ludden Library and Instructional Technology. In addition, the VPAA serves as a member of the Presidents Cabinet (executive leadership team) for LCCC, works in full partnership with other members of the executive team, as well as other departments, to develop and assess overall strategic planning for the College, support initiatives such as shared governance and accreditation, facilitate other college and university partnerships, and act in the role of a change leader. Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need.

Organizational Relationship: This position serves as the chief academic officer providing leadership to the Academic Affairs functional department, including all affiliated Academic Divisions and/or Work Groups; the VPAA has direct managerial responsibility for multiple Academic Deans, Divisional Directors, and designated support staff. The direct reporting relationship is to the LCCC President. Direct cross-functional accountability also exists between this position and others members of the LCCC Presidents Cabinet.

Education and Experience Requirements:

A masters degree is required, and an earned Doctorate degree or active pursuit of a Doctorate Degree is strongly preferred. All degrees must be from an accredited institution.

Progressively responsible experience, including but not limited to administrative roles within an academic setting required.

Experience serving in an administrative role at a community college strongly preferred.

Prior teaching experience, especially at a community college is preferred.

Academic Leadership and Oversight The VPAA is accountable as the chief academic officer of the College providing oversight and strategic executive guidance in the planning, development, implementation, assessment, evaluation, and continuous program improvement for all aspects of academic programming at LCCC. This functional tasking area may include:

Provides leadership in determining the academic vision and priorities of the college through the development and implementation of the strategic academic plan; foster long-range planning and development of curriculum, programs and delivery methods that meet the needs of 21st century students and communities.
Develops and provides oversight on the fulfillment of comprehensive strategic academic plan and supporting departmental/divisional operational plans that complement LCCCs institutional strategic plan, vision, mission, and objectives.

Assumes a key role in academic change as necessary stemming from current issues affecting higher education, organizational change, strategic change, as well as emerging technologies; provides strategic direction and support for non-traditional models of delivery, and the continued evolution of teaching and learning resources that enhance curriculum, alternative structural models, etc.
Leads efforts to maintain and fulfill high standards for pedagogy and curricular development by promoting quality and growth of academic programs with a vision that stresses partnership and excellence in teaching and service with a focus on improving educational outcomes, student retention and completion.
Enhance the teaching and learning experience through faculty development, innovative partnerships and a comprehensive assessment process; ensuring the high standard and integrity of the academic programs; and leading a successful institutional re-accreditation process.

Functional Department Management -- The VPAA has responsibility for the successful and effective management of the people and resources within the department, plus oversight responsibilities for the management of the functional divisions/work groups with the Academic Affairs area. Provides strong, dynamic academic and administrative leadership, fostering an environment that encourages teaching and learning excellence, and service via supporting a productive and collegial team environment throughout the academy.
Utilizes a rational systematic process to facilitate fiscally responsible budgeting within the Academic Affairs functional area including either directly and/or providing oversight to the planning, assessing trend data, researching as appropriate, preparing and presenting proposals, advocating for, etc., in support of securing financial resources necessary for the fulfillment of academic strategic initiatives while balancing the overall institutional needs.
Guides overall faculty and staff development directly and/or by working with senior managers (e.g., Deans and/or Directors) to plan and implement professional development and growth for faculty and staff. Provides effective managerial oversight of direct reports, to include providing timely and relevant performance feedback, annual evaluations, and ongoing mentorship to promote effective and consistent leadership throughout the Academic Affairs function.
Either directly or via delegation, provides oversight to the hiring and performance management of faculty and staff within the Academic Affairs function; appropriately and consistently manages escalated personnel issues/concerns in accordance with any applicable LCCC policy/procedure, and state/federal regulation.
Leads overall intra-departmental efforts to plan and implement an approach to recruiting, developing, and retaining faculty and staff who demonstrate knowledge, skills, and attitudes that foster an inclusive campus climate.

Opportunity Overview

The next Vice President for Academic Affairs will be a dynamic and creative individual. This person will be team-oriented with the ability to build consensus around the decision-making process and to communicate those decisions objectively. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and have the ability to make evidence-based decisions and implement a vision that is tied to student success and organizational effectiveness. This person will enjoy collaboratively building programs and policies from the ground-up.

A significant priority facing the next Chief Academic Officer will be reintegrating workforce development programs with a comprehensive academic affairs division. Both areas are eager to help the next VPAA and the College transition to this model, while retaining the departments well-deserved reputation for being entrepreneurial, responsive, and innovative.

The next Vice President for Academic Affairs will be leading the development of a number of policies and practices, including establishing an effective program review process. The next leader of Academic Affairs will also create a plan for evaluating long-term enrollment patterns for the College. The College has strong academic programs, but is in need of some standard practices and basic structure; therefore, an academic plan will be developed under the guidance of the next VPAA. The Vice President for Academic Affairs will also have the opportunity to establish relationships with nearby universities and review existing articulation agreements.

Currently, and over the next few years, there will be a number of key academic deans retiring. This is an excellent opportunity for the Vice President for Academic Affairs to hire new team members and reorganize the area, as appropriate. Lastly, the next Vice President for Academic Affairs will appreciate the importance of advisory boards and work to build and use those groups effectively in the decision-making process.

In short and as a synopsis, there are several opportunities this next leader will have. Some of them include:

Implement a restructure/redesign of the Academic and Academic Support Divisions, with particular emphasis given to the re-integration of many applied academic degree programs, and other non-credit community and workforce development programs.
Recruit and develop academic leadership to accompany the new organizational model.
Design and establish a comprehensive faculty orientation and development program, giving priority focus on the development of new faculty at LCCC. The new program should also include continuing professional development opportunities that lead toward continuous improvement in the quality of instruction.
Working closely with the faculty, Deans and other academic leadership, and human resources, develop a new, comprehensive model for faculty evaluation.
Redesign the academic program review model to incorporate the principles of continuous improvement.
In collaboration with the campus community, as well as external stakeholders and partners, create a strategic academic plan that charts the current and future programming needs for the institution.
Work with the President and the Board of Trustees to update and establish academic policies and procedures.
Create a model for assessing instructional productivity to better inform institutional decisions regarding academic offerings.
Strengthen existing and build new relationships with other colleges and university partners for articulation of programs leading toward bachelors degrees, and to build beneficial collaborations/partnerships for current and/or new program offerings.
Help to develop a new College-wide Shared Governance process.
