Illinois RB Jason Ford ineligible for bowl

Posted by?Jerry HinnenCoachless 6-7?UCLA and coachless 6-6?Illinois's matchup in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl has been panned as one of the least intriguing of the bowl season from the day it was announced, and the Bruins haven't seemed particularly interested in the game themselves, skipping out on practice and having four players miss the game through academic and team rules issues. But just to prove they can match their opponent step-for-step in indifference as well as lack of regular season wins, the Illini have now also announced a major absence from the game.

The player in question is leading rusher Jason Ford, who the Illini have confirmed will be?academically ineligible for the bowl and will not make the trip to San Francisco. The announcement ends the career of Ford, a senior with 1,962 rushing yards.

Reserve wide receiver Jake Kumerow?will also miss the game through academics.?

Ford appeared in at least 12 games all four years of his Illini career but had to wait to wait until the 2011 season for a chance as the featured back thanks to Mikel LeShoure. While Ford's total of 600 yards and 7 touchdowns led the Illini in both categories this year, an expected breakout season failed to materialize as Ford reached the 100-yard mark just one time (vs. Penn State) and averaged just 3.9 yards per-carry. His 26 career rushing touchdowns do place him second on the Illinois all-time list in that category.

Ford will likely be replaced by fellow senior Troy Pollard, who totaled 462 yards this season but on only 62 carries, a 7.5 yard average.

JingXing S7100: an Android tablet for gaming | Ubergizmo

JingXing S7100It looks like the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY isn?t going to be the only dedicated Android gaming device on the block, a company named JingXing has decided to step into that niche with a device of its own: the JingXing S7100. However, the S7100 isn?t a phone and takes the form factor of tablet instead, and features gamepad controls on the sides of the display.

While the specs of the device weren?t revealed, it will be running on Android (as evident by the dedicated Android buttons on the bottom of the device and the Android logo on the back), and will feature a rear camera and a front facing camera. The tablet?s gamepad gives users a 4-way D-pad, 4 regular buttons (circle, triangle, square, x), as well as start and select. No sign of shoulder buttons, so I guess you?ll need to use onscreen controls for those.

Don?t expect to have a dedicated app store like the Xperia PLAY/PlayStation Vita ? but you can be pretty sure that ROM emulators are going to be this tablet?s best friends.?No word on pricing or availability, but we?ll keep you posted if it turns up on this side of the world. It?s always interesting to see tablet manufacturers putting their own spin on Android devices ? with the plethora of tablets available on the market today, they need to find a way to stand out somehow.

(AP) ? Iraq's Shiite spiritual leader on Friday demanded the country's politicians work to restore security, saying their conflicts were to blame for attacks like the devastating bombings that tore through mostly Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad and killed at least 69 people.

The calls by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, made by his representative in a Friday prayer sermon, implicitly hit on the political showdown between the Shiite prime minister and the top Sunni political leader in the country, against whom the government put out an arrest warrant, accusing him of running hit squads.

Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi has denied the charges, which have fueled Sunni fears that the minority community is being pushed out of influence by the Shiite-dominated government.

Al-Sistani's aide Ahmed al-Safi did not specifically mention the conflict or any of the players in it, but his comments seemed to be a call for Sunni politicians to back down.

If someone is "dealing with terrorism, what should we do? What is the punishment that he must face after knowing that he is a killer?" al-Safi said in his sermon in the holy city of Karbala.

"The prestige of the government must be preserved ... part of its prestige is punishing abusers," he said. "The security file is not a luxury! People can be patient with lack of electricity, or lack of services, but not blood. They cannot be patient over their blood. Wyy don't you exert your efforts to preserve the blood of these people?"

Al-Sistani, who is in his mid 80s, is the most respected cleric among Iraq's Shiite majority. But he rarely appears in public and stopped meeting with politicians since around the middle of this year. He usually makes his positions known through his representative at the prayer sermon.

Sixteen blasts across Baghdad on Thursday also wounded nearly 200 people, evoking fears Iraq could dissolve into a new round of sectarian violence now that American troops have left.

Al-Safi condemned the bombing, saying, "The people are looking forward for a new life after the departure of the foreign forces, instead they face massacres."

"Politicians, be merciful with this country. You are dragging the country with your crises and you are held responsible."

These calls were echoed by other Shiite and Sunni clerics. Muqtada al-Sadr, a radical cleric, whose militiamen were blamed for sectarian killings during the worst of Iraq's violence, issued a statement, calling the conflict among Iraqi politicians as "the conflict of the mighty" which "led to the deterioration of the fragile security."

The preacher of Abu Hanifa, the main Sunni mosque in Baghdad, also criticized the Iraqi leaders who "preoccupy themselves with side issues and conflicts and ignore essential issues. You (politicians) have to pay heed to reunite Iraqis. You have to give up hatred, killing and intimidation," Sheik Ahmed al-Taha told worshippers in his sermon.

"Do not let our defeated enemy (the Americans) say that we are unable to continue with them," he added.

Google Activates 700,000 Android Devices a Day

Google said over 700,000 new Android devices are activated each day, capping a year of rapid growth for the popular smartphone platform.

Android chief Andy Rubin said the number works out to around 5 million Android users each week, or roughly the iPhone 4S? opening weekend sales figures. He added daily activations include cellular devices only, not re-sold or Wi-Fi ones.

Android?s steadily-climbing activations highlight the platform?s continued worldwide expansion. Google?s operating system powers more than half of the smartphones sold during the third quarter and runs on about 200 million activations to date.

Apple still holds the top device maker spot with over 250 million iOS users, but the gap between Android and iOS is shrinking. Apple?s 50-million device cushion is expected to shrink as Android phones continue to flood the market, while upstarts like Windows join the fray in 2012.

Earlier this month, Google chairman Eric Schmidt hinted at plans for Android domination, saying the platform tops Apple on price and number of vendors. The trend is expected to continue, especially in Asia where Android?s presence on low-end devices ? from makers like Huawei and ZTE ? add to its massive activation numbers.

Apple, with its single iPhone model, hasn?t flourished in Asia, where the high price-point limits expansion into emerging markets.

Meanwhile, Samsung and HTC plan to release high-end flagship devices ? such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and HTC Elite ? which run ?Ice Cream Sandwich,? latest version of Android. Both manufacturers, which also release low-end devices, have surpassed Apple in shipments, partly a portfolio of products.

Android?s open-source OS contributed to its massive activation numbers, but it also has drawbacks. Malware continually plagues the platform and infected apps regularly appear on Android market. The security risk may hinder Google?s dive into mobile payments if consumers perceive Android as insecure.

Rivals, including a new line of Windows smartphones, are expected to ramp up competition next year.

Break Up the Banks

To be sure, the executives lost their jobs and now must drop claims for additional compensation. But, according to the FDIC, the four still earned more than $95 million from January 2005 through September 2008. This is what happens when financial executives are compensated for ?return on equity? unadjusted for risk. The executives get the upside when things go well; when the downside risks materialize, they lose nothing (or close to it).

Pakistan PM alleges conspiracy to oust government (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan's prime minister claimed Thursday there was a conspiracy to oust the country's civilian government, a sign of growing tension with the army over a secret memo sent to Washington earlier this year asking for help in averting a supposed military coup.

The conflict between the army and the government intensified this week after the Supreme Court began a hearing into the scandal, which has already forced Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S. to resign and also threatens the president.

The political crisis comes as Pakistan is already facing a violent Taliban insurgency, a failing economy and severe tension with its most important ally, the United States, over NATO airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November.

"Conspiracies are being hatched to pack up the elected government," Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said during a speech in Islamabad.

The prime minister did not specifically blame the military, but later in the day he made clear in a speech to parliament that the army must operate under the control of the government.

"They have to be answerable to this parliament," Gilani said. "They cannot be a state within a state."

The army is considered the strongest institution in Pakistan and has ruled the country for much of its 64-year history after carrying out a series of military coups. Analysts have expressed doubt that a coup is likely at this time, but the memo scandal has exacerbated already strained ties between the army and the government.

Gilani's comments are a sharp turn for the prime minister. He rejected the notion of a standoff between the army and the civilian leadership less than a week ago. Since then, the Supreme Court opened its hearing into the scandal and demanded a reply from President Asif Ali Zardari.

The government has questioned the need for the court hearing, saying the parliament is already investigating the matter.

"I can't see how all sides can walk it back at this point," said Cyril Almeida, a columnist for Dawn newspaper. "It seems like now someone has to go. The guy who is most vulnerable in theory, and perhaps in practice, is Zardari."

Mansoor Ijaz, a U.S. businessman of Pakistani origin, has accused Pakistan's former ambassador to Washington, Husain Haqqani, of crafting the memo sent to a senior U.S. military official asking for help in averting a coup following the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May.

Ijaz claimed Haqqani acted with Zardari's support. Both Haqqani and the president have denied the allegations, but the envoy resigned in the wake of the scandal.

Some analysts have questioned Ijaz's credibility and suggested the affair is a conspiracy cooked up by the military to embarrass the government. They have pointed out that fear of a coup in May is strange, since the military was in an unfavorable position at the time.

The raid against bin Laden in a Pakistani garrison town enraged the army because it was not told about it beforehand. But it also humiliated the force because it was not able to stop the operation.

Gilani reminded the parliament Thursday that his government extended "solid support" to the army and its intelligence agency, the ISI, following the raid.

Solmaz Wein: Biscuit Dough Donuts

It was probably not the best idea to make these at home by myself... any preconceived notions of self-control went flying out the window after I took my first bite.

This recipe is totally decadent and will be sure to impress your guests when you handily whip up a batch of donuts at home for breakfast (or even better, for dessert!).

(I used canola oil instead of peanut oil which has a high enough smoking point to handle this recipe -- make sure to be extremely careful, no one wants 350 degree oil burns!)

First, pop open your can of biscuits and cut out holes in the center (I used a knife):

Heat your oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and place the dough rings (and soon to be donut holes) in the heated oil, flipping with tongs until golden on both sides (about 90 seconds total).? Remove donuts with tongs and place on paper towels until cooled.

Finally, top with cinnamon and sugar mix or icing and sprinkles and serve!

PFT: Harrison loses appeal on suspension

Detroit Lions v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

We handle the big injury stories Friday in the rumor mill.

The rest goes right here, in America?s most enticing weekly segment about the injury report.

1. Here are the players were updated during the day on the rumor mill: Kevin Smith, Andre Johnson, Colt McCoy, Justin Tuck, and?Kyle Orton.

2. The Eagles are ready to go, except for defensive end Darryl Tapp who is doubtful with a broken rib.

3. The Jets get running back Joe McKnight and defensive lineman Mike Devito back in the lineup for their game against Philly.

4. The Packers are short a number of key players once again: Linebacker Desmond?Bishop (calf), Chad Clifton (hamstring), wideout Greg Jennings (knee), and defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (concussion) are all out. Running back Brandon Saine (concussion), James Starks (ankle), and guard Josh Sitton (knee) are questionable. Starks says he?ll play.

5. The Dolphins list quarterback?Matt Moore (head/neck), tackle Jake Long (back), and tight end Anthony Fasano (ribs) as questionable. They all practiced on a limited basis and look likely to face the Bills. ?Linebacker Koa Misi (shoulder) is out.

6. Mark Ingram is out again for the Saints because of his toe injury.

7. The Bills will be without Peter King?s favorite tight end Scott Chandler, who is out with an ankle injury.

8. The Bucs will be without receiver?Arrelious Benn on Saturday night against the Cowboys.?Defensive end Michael Bennett (toe), defensive tackle Brian Price (ankle) and wideout Sammie Stroughter (knee) are all questionable. Bennett is the longest shot of the questionables.

9. Dallas has a number of questionable starters: cornerback?Michael Jenkins (shoulder), center Phil Costa (concussion), and linebacker DeMarcus Ware (neck). Costa has been cleared, but still may sit.?Ware is a safe bet to play.

10. Three Broncos secondary members are questionable: David Bruton (achilles), Brian Dawkins (neck), and cornerback Andre? Goodman (concussion). Only Bruton missed practice all week.

11. ?The Patriots listed safety Patrick Chung and tackle Sebastian Vollmer as doubtful. That way they can downgrade them to out on Saturday and then I can get a cheap post out of it while trying to cram my ?family time? in for the week.

12. Devin Hester (ankle) is questionable for the Bears. Jay Cutler (thumb), Matt Forte (knee), and Sam Hurd (5-10 kilos) are all out.

13. The Panthers list tackle Jordan Gross (ankle) as questionable for Sunday?s game. They really missed him last week, but he returned for a limited practice Friday.

14. Kyle Orton is officially probable (thumb) for the Chiefs. He?ll start on Sunday against the Packers.

15. The Bengals will likely be without running back Brian Leonard, who is doubtful with a knee injury. The Bengals get Carlos Dunlap back. Tackle Andre Smith (ankle) is questionable after not practicing Friday.

16. The Raiders will be without wideout?Jacoby Ford (foot) and running back Darren McFadden (foot) yet again. Cornerback Chris Johnson is away from the team following the death of his sister. He?s out.

The team could get Denarius Moore (foot) back. He?s questionable. Also questionable:?safety Michael Huff (hamstring) and running back Taiwan Jones (hamstring). They didn?t practice all week. Oakland is very banged up.

17. Half of the Ravens team is questionable: Linebacker Ray?Lewis (toe), cornerback Lardarius Webb (toe), kicker Billy Cundiff (calf), ?guard Ben Grubbs (toe), defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (back), defensive tackle Cory Redding (ankle) and cornerback Chris Carr (back). Lewis is expected to return to the lineup Sunday night.

18. Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb (head) is officially questionable. He was limited in practice during the week, but the Cardinals? beat writers think John Skelton will get the start.

19. The Titans list quarterback?Matt Hasselbeck (calf) as questionable. He?s expected to start. Look for wideout Nate Washington (ankle) to play despite being questionable. He?s been playing in pain for weeks.
